Position Summary

The OR Nurse assigned to the Vision & Eye Center provides specialized perioperative nursing care to patients undergoing ophthalmologic and vision-related surgical procedures. The role ensures patient safety, assists surgeons throughout the procedure, and maintains regulatory and professional standards to support optimal surgical outcomes.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

A. Pre-Operative Responsibilities

  • Conduct patient assessment, verification, and pre-operative checklists aligned with ophthalmic procedures.
  • Prepare and ensure completeness, cleanliness, and functionality of surgical instruments, ophthalmic microsurgical equipment, and supplies (e.g., phacoemulsification system).
  • Collaborate with surgical team to ensure proper patient positioning and eye protection measures.
  • Educate patients and families regarding pre-operative guidelines and expectations.

B. Intra-Operative Responsibilities

  • Assist ophthalmic surgeons in procedures such as:
  • Cataract extraction
  • Glaucoma surgery
  • Vitrectomy
  • Corneal transplant
  • Retinal repair
  • Oculoplastic procedures
  • Maintain sterile field and apply aseptic techniques.
  • Monitor patient status and coordinate with anesthesia personnel.
  • Anticipate surgeon needs and provide microsurgical instruments and supplies promptly.
  • Proper handling, labeling, and documentation of operative specimens.

C. Post-Operative Responsibilities

  • Ensure safe transfer of patients to the recovery area.
  • Perform post-operative assessment and provide patient education on eye care, medication regimen, and follow-up requirements.
  • Document nursing care, operative notes, and significant observations.
  • Report abnormalities to the healthcare team promptly.

D. Administrative & Quality Functions

  • Ensure completeness and accuracy of OR documentation, checklists, and incident reports.
  • Participate in inventory and maintenance of ophthalmic equipment and instruments.
  • Adhere to Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) standards and Vision & Eye Center OR protocols.
  • Support continuing education, competencies, and quality initiatives within the unit.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • License: Registered Nurse (PRC)
  • Experience:
  • Preferably at least 1 year OR experience
  • Prior experience in ophthalmology/eye center procedures is an advantage
  • Training/Certifications (preferred):
  • BLS / ACLS
  • Perioperative Nursing Training
  • Ophthalmic / Microsurgical Nursing Training

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Exposure to surgical equipment, anesthetic agents, and biological materials.
  • Standing for long periods; assisting with patient transfers.
  • Willing to work rotating shifts and on-call schedules.
