Accountant

We are hiring a CPA with deep CPG experience to own accounting accuracy, margin integrity, and cash discipline. You will lead the monthly close, build scalable controls, and turn messy CPG data into clean insight for inventory, trade spend, and contribution margin by channel. This role requires hands-on coordination across multiple vendors, spreadsheets, and third-party systems to maintain financial accuracy in a multi-channel environment without a formal ERP.

You will also oversee accounting for various forms of investment capital—grants, competition prizes, convertible notes, SAFEs, and partners' capital—as the company transitions from a multi-member LLC to a C Corporation by year-end.

Core Responsibilities

• Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close including reconciliations, journal entries, variance analysis, and consolidated financials.
• Maintain GAAP-compliant accounting policies tailored for a CPG business with complex inventory, trade spend, and promotional activity.
• Manage bookkeeping and invoice generation within QuickBooks Online.
• Build and maintain channel P&Ls for DTC, retail, marketplace, and B2B.
• Partner with Operations, Sales, and Supply Chain to forecast demand, production, and cash needs.
• Prepare board-ready financial packages and management reports.
• Coordinate with external tax advisors for federal, state, sales, and international compliance, including R&D tax credit opportunities.
• Lead audits and reviews, respond to auditor requests, and strengthen internal controls.
• Maintain structured documentation to reconcile data across spreadsheets and vendor systems in the absence of a centralized ERP.
• Manage and report on diverse investment and equity instruments such as grants, competition prizes, convertible notes, SAFEs, and partners' capital during and after the transition to a C Corporation structure.

CPG-Specific Responsibilities

• Inventory and COGS: Manage costing methods (standard, weighted average, FIFO). Track landed cost, freight in, duties, and co-packer fees. Reconcile ingredients, packaging, WIP, and finished goods inventory.
• Trade Spend and Deductions: Design promotion accruals, reconcile short pays, and manage slotting, MDF, OTIF, and chargebacks through retailer and marketplace portals.
• Revenue and Channel Nuance: Recognize revenue accurately across wholesale, marketplace, and DTC. Handle EDI timing differences, chargebacks, returns, and allowances.
• Production and Co-packers: Tie POs, yields, scrap, and conversion costs back to SKU-level margins.
• Cost Control: Build guardrails for price changes, BOM updates, and logistics surcharges.
• 3PL and Logistics: Manage inventory accuracy and movement through Shipdudes (powered by ShipBob's WMS), ensuring clean cutoffs, cycle counts, and reconciliations across platforms.
• R&D and Tax Readiness: Track eligible spend for R&D tax credits and support external advisors in documentation and claims.

Qualifications

• Active CPA or equivalent credential.
• 3 to 10 years in accounting or audit with at least 3 years inside a CPG or consumer brand environment.
• Mastery of GAAP, inventory accounting, revenue recognition, and internal controls.
• Familiarity with CPG-specific bookkeeping and tax nuances, including product samples, trade spend, and promotional deductions.
• Proven track record closing the books quickly and accurately in a multi-channel CPG business.
• Experience managing bookkeeping in QuickBooks Online and coordinating data across multiple vendors and systems.
• Advanced spreadsheet skills with comfort building models and error checks.
• Clear communicator who can translate accounting into plain English and business action.
• Experience accounting for investment capital, including grants, convertible instruments, SAFEs, and partner equity in evolving corporate structures.

• $10 USD per hour
