Job Summary

The Packaging Engineer is responsible for developing, testing, and implementing packaging solutions that ensure product integrity throughout the supply chain. This includes packaging design, specifications, labeling, compliance, supplier coordination, and sustainability initiatives. The role ensures packaging meets safety, cost, quality, and regulatory requirements while supporting continuous improvement and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead packaging projects across global external manufacturing, including supplier management, strategy, and cost savings initiatives.
  • Develop and improve packaging protocols across primary, secondary, tertiary, and display-level packaging to minimize product loss or damage.
  • Design and test packaging using paperboard, corrugate, plastics, metals, and other materials.
  • Create Bills of Materials (BOM) and specifications, including unit of measure definitions, to support product documentation.
  • Manage labeling, graphics, and compliance requirements for packaging and transit regulations (e.g., CFR49, medical devices, cosmetics).
  • Perform ISTA, ASTM, ISO testing, and other evaluations to ensure packaging quality and performance.
  • Write assembly, kitting, and packaging instructions and coordinate offsite display assembly for distribution.
  • Partner with suppliers, graphics teams, and internal stakeholders to implement packaging solutions.
  • Conduct value analysis to balance form, fit, function, cost, and sustainability.
  • Resolve discrepancies between stakeholders and suppliers regarding packaging graphics and definitions.
  • Support packaging data collection, specification updates, and documentation alignment with quality standards.
  • Research new packaging technologies, materials, and regulations to keep packaging practices current.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering, Packaging Technologies, Engineering, Operations, Supply Chain, or related Science.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of packaging engineering experience.
  • Experience with MRP systems and ERP tools.
  • Experience in retail packaging (preferred).
  • Familiarity with global packaging initiatives and regulations such as EU-MDR, EU-PPWR, UK-PPT, EU-Deforestation, France Triman, M2030, US EPR, or similar (preferred).
