Job Summary

The Product Engineer is responsible for managing change and design control processes for externally manufactured products. This includes overseeing specifications, addressing product issues that affect production and performance, conducting testing, supporting development activities, and maintaining design history documentation.

The role spans the full product life cycle—from conception to end-of-life—covering product development, testing, problem resolution, and change control for existing products. It requires working closely with external manufacturing partners to ensure compliance with global regulatory requirements, improve supply chain efficiency, and support product sustainability initiatives.

This position also collaborates with packaging and labeling functions to ensure alignment between product design, packaging compliance, and regulatory standards. Success in this role is measured by on-time delivery of new product launches, cost savings initiatives, and execution of projects against defined parameters.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage projects involving external manufacturing, including strategy, relationship management, supply continuity, change/design control, product introduction, and cost optimization.
  • Execute design change procedures, maintain technical files, product specifications, and related documentation.
  • Investigate and resolve product supply issues to ensure continuity.
  • Develop internal processes and tools to streamline engineering workflows.
  • Collaborate with external manufacturers to align specifications and ensure compliance with requirements.
  • Coordinate new product introduction activities within the supply chain, including demand planning parameters.
  • Review product design for compliance with standards, specifications, and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate and manage product testing (e.g., DFMEA, ISO testing, environmental/conditional testing).
  • Define and monitor performance metrics for contract manufacturers.
  • Apply modeling, root cause analysis, operations analysis, and financial analysis to support business decisions.
  • Partner with supply chain and sourcing teams to improve inventory control and inventory strategy.
  • Support timely product launches, regulatory labeling/marking transitions, and compliance with standards (e.g., FDA, EUMDR, GS1, UDI, GTIN).
  • Participate in business and technical meetings to evaluate and prioritize project opportunities.
  • Prepare reports and conduct analysis such as ROI, MOQ vs. EOQ, and break-even studies.
  • Stay updated on emerging materials, processes, and technologies relevant to product design and manufacturing.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Operations, Supply Chain, or a related scientific field.
  • 5+ years in engineering, product design, or specification development.
  • 3+ years of project management experience.
  • Experience with product design/change control and working with regulated products (e.g., FDA, EUDAMED).
  • Familiarity with GS1, UDI, and barcode procedures.
  • Experience with ERP systems (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics, NetSuite, or equivalent).
