Role Overview

The Data Platform Engineer is responsible for the technical foundation of Microsoft Fabric implementation, focusing on platform architecture, governance, performance management, cost optimisation, security, and integration oversight. This role provides architectural leadership for both internal teams and external vendors building data products on the Fabric platform.

Key Responsibilities

Platform Architecture & Infrastructure

  • Design and implement enterprise Microsoft Fabric architecture with focus on performance, scalability, and cost optimisation
  • Build and maintain core data infrastructure, including data lakes, semantic layers, and integration patterns
  • Establish security models, access controls, and compliance frameworks across both Fabric and legacy environments
  • Manage platform performance monitoring, capacity planning, and resource allocation
  • Implement cost governance frameworks including usage monitoring, charge-back models, and optimisation strategies
  • Design and maintain integrations between Fabric and legacy systems (SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS, Excel/VBA, cubes)

Governance & Standards

  • Define and enforce data governance policies, quality standards, and architectural principles
  • Establish development standards, deployment pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code practices
  • Create and maintain platform documentation, architectural guidelines, and best practice standards
  • Implement data lineage, cataloguing, and metadata management solutions
  • Design disaster recovery and business continuity strategies for the data platform

Technical Leadership & Vendor Management

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to Data Engineers and Data Analysts
  • Lead architectural governance for external vendors building data products on Fabric platform
  • Ensure external contractors adhere to established data architecture standards and patterns
  • Review and approve vendor technical designs and implementation approaches
  • Support troubleshooting of complex technical issues across both internal and vendor-built solutions
  • Drive adoption of platform capabilities and coordinate new feature rollouts with vendor teams

Strategic Platform Development

  • Evaluate and implement new Microsoft Fabric features and capabilities
  • Design integration patterns for connecting external systems and data sources
  • Plan and execute platform upgrades, migrations, and capacity scaling
  • Collaborate with enterprise architecture teams on broader technology strategy

Required Skills and Experience

Essential Requirements

  • 4+ years data platform engineering experience with modern cloud platforms
  • 2+ years hands-on Microsoft Fabric platform administration and architecture
  • Expert-level cost management and performance optimisation for large-scale data platforms
  • Strong security expertise including Azure AD, RBAC, data privacy, and compliance frameworks
  • Integration experience connecting Fabric with legacy systems (SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS, Excel/VBA)
  • Performance tuning expertise across Fabric compute engines and legacy SQL Server environments
  • Scalability planning for growing data volumes and user bases

  • Microsoft Azure certifications (AZ-305, DP-203, DP-700)
  • Experience with enterprise data governance tools and frameworks
  • Background in platform engineering or DevOps practices
  • Knowledge of data mesh or federated analytics architectures
  • Experience with monitoring tools and observability platforms
