As a Payroll Officer, you'll own the full payroll cycle end-to-end, ensuring our people are paid accurately, on time, and always in compliance. Beyond processing, you'll be a key partner in labour cost management, reporting, and driving operational excellence across both employees and third-party labour.
This role is hands-on, data-driven, and business-critical—perfect for someone who thrives on accuracy, accountability, and making payroll more efficient and scalable.
Key Responsibilities- Lead end-to-end payroll for all employee types (salaried and timesheet-based), ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance.
- Manage statutory requirements including PAYG, Superannuation, Payroll Tax, and Single Touch Payroll (STP) submissions to the ATO.
- Ensure compliance with Fair Work, NES, modern awards, and contractual obligations.
- Own payroll accounting deliverables: journals, month-end accruals, reconciliations, and financial reporting inputs.
- Oversee 3PL labour compliance, validating weekly timesheets, invoices, and vendor reporting accuracy.
- Ensure payroll remains compliant with all obligations, including STP, payroll tax, WorkCover, FBT reporting, and legislative updates.
- Process superannuation by calculating SG, salary sacrifice, and RESC contributions, and lodging batch payments accurately.
- Handle employee exits by calculating redundancies, ETPs, and leave payouts, while applying the correct tax rules and STP 2 codes.
- Register entities, calculate payroll tax liabilities across states, lodge monthly and annual returns, reconcile with the GL, and ensure timely payments.
- Optimise payroll systems (e.g., Rippling, Deputy)—championing automation, accuracy, and scalability.
- Administer the Employee Share Scheme (ESS), including compliance, tracking, and reporting.
- Lead and support payroll audits, providing documentation, process visibility, and system transparency.
- Identify and deliver continuous improvements, turning payroll data into actionable insights for compliance, cost control, and decision-making.
- 2+ years' experience in end-to-end payroll, ideally in high-growth or complex labour environments.
- Solid knowledge of Australian payroll across modern awards, Fair Work compliance, and STP.
- Expert knowledge: award compliance, payroll tax (all states), super, portable LSL, workers comp, FBT
- Hands-on experience with cloud-based payroll platforms (Rippling, Deputy, Xero, or similar) and strong Excel/reporting skills.
- Detail-obsessed, with excellent analytical and reconciliation ability.
- Organised, deadline-driven, and able to manage both recurring processes and ad hoc priorities.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-change environment; proactive in driving improvements.
- A natural sense of ownership, accountability, and discretion when handling sensitive information.
