English to Cebuano Translator

ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is a US non-profit, tax-exempt, private organization established in 1895 that saves wildlife and wild places by understanding critical issues, crafting science- based solutions, and taking conservation actions that benefit nature and humanity. With more than a century of experience, long-term commitments in dozens of landscapes, presence in more than 60 nations, and experience helping to establish over 150 protected areas across the globe, WCS has amassed the biological knowledge, cultural understanding, and partnerships to ensure that vibrant, wild places and wildlife thrive alongside local communities. Working with local communities and organizations, that knowledge is applied to address species, habitat, and ecosystem management issues critical to improving the quality of life of vulnerable communities whose livelihoods depend on the direct utilization of natural resources.

PROGRAM BACKGROUND

Wildlife Conservation Society Philippines has a project for the conservation of cartilaginous fishes (sharks and rays). As part of our public engagement and outreach efforts, we are partnering with the Marine Wildlife Conservation Society of the Philippines for a Cebuano version of the Pating Patrol booklet to promote the conservation of shark and rays in the Bohol Sea.

To ensure linguistic accuracy, cultural appropriateness, and consistency in conservation messaging, WCS seeks the services of a qualified translator to undertake the translation of the booklet text.

SCOPE OF SERVICE

To produce an accurate, clear, and contextually appropriate translation of the Pating Patrol booklet from English to Cebuano, ensuring that key conservation messages are faithfully conveyed and easily understood by the intended audience, the Translator shall:

1. Review the original English version of the Pating Patrol (approximately 20 pages).

2. Translate the full text, including captions, headings, and short narratives into Cebuano.

3. Ensure translation accuracy, correct grammar, natural flow, and readability suitable for the target audience (e.g., coastal communities and Local Government Units).

4. Coordinate with WCS and MWWP for clarification on terminologies, tone, or context as necessary.

5. Submit the translated text in an editable digital format (MS Word) for lay-out integration.

6. Revise the translated text as needed based on feedback from WCS and MWWP.

The Translator will work under the direct supervision of the WCS Conservation Impact Unit, and in close coordination with the Marine Wildlife Watch of the Philippines. All deliverables will be submitted electronically to WCS for review and approval.

DURATION

The duration of the project is 2 months from signing the engagement agreement. A detailed work plan with timelines will be agreed upon at the start of the engagement, with possible minor revisions thereafter based on negotiations or feedback.

• Signing of contract 20% (1st week of Month 1)
• Submission of draft translation 20% (4th week of Month 1)
• Submission of revised/final translation 50% (4th week of Month 2)

EXPECTED DELIVERABLES

• Signed contract (Month 1, Week 1)
• First full draft of translation (Month 1, Week 4)
• Final version of the Pating Patrol (Cebuano version) (Month 2, W4)

QUALIFICATION

The candidate preferably should have the following:

• Bachelor's degree in Communications, Linguistics, Education, or related field;
• At least 3 years of experience in translation, editing, or technical writing;
• Excellent command of English and Cebuano language;
• Familiarity with environmental, marine, or conservation-related terminologies preferred;
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to linguistic and cultural accuracy.

PAYMENT TERMS AND SCHEDULE

The consultancy fee will be negotiated based on the candidate's qualifications and prevailing rates. Payment will be made in tranches upon submission and approval of deliverables, as follows:

• 20% upon submission signed contract
• 30% upon submission and acceptance of the draft translation
• 50% upon submission and acceptance of the final document

CONFIDENTIALITY AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

All materials and outputs produced under this TOR are the property of WCS and MWWP. The translator shall treat all documents and information obtained during the engagement as confidential and shall not disclose them without written consent.
