While formal education isn't always required, a background in culinary arts, along with experience using commercial baking equipment, is highly beneficial. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Preparation & Mixing: Measure, weigh, and mix ingredients for various baked goods like breads, cakes, and pastries.
  • Dough Production: Knead, roll, cut, and shape dough and batters by hand or using industrial mixers.
  • Baking & Monitoring: Operate ovens, monitor temperatures and baking times, and ensure products are baked to perfection.
  • Decorating & Finishing: Apply glazes, icings, toppings, and other decorations to baked goods for presentation.
  • Quality Control: Inspect raw ingredients and finished products for quality, taste, texture, and appearance.
  • Hygiene & Safety: Clean and maintain a tidy workstation and all baking equipment, adhering to health and safety regulations.
  • Inventory & Supplies: Monitor and order ingredients and supplies, managing inventory levels effectively.
  • Customer Interaction: Address customer questions, provide product information, and manage sales in retail settings.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain records of production, sales, inventory, and financial transactions.

Requirements

  • Manual Dexterity: Skilled in hand-kneading, shaping, and decorating, requiring fine motor skills.
  • Experience: Proficiency with specialized kitchen equipment, including mixers, ovens, and cutters, is crucial.
  • Knowledge of Recipes: Ability to follow established recipes accurately and consistently.
  • Culinary Training: While not always a formal requirement, culinary training or a certificate in baking and pastry can be beneficial.
  • Physical Stamina: The role often involves early mornings or late nights, and requires standing for long periods and lifting ingredients.
  • Creativity: Ability to create innovative baked goods and provide recommendations for product improvement.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to work early hours, nights, weekends, and holidays to meet customer demands.
