The Principal Civil Engineer is responsible managing the end-to-end delivery of multi-disciplinary Transport projects including project planning, team management, contractual and commercial management etc.

Main activities and responsibilities includes:

• Comply with all role specific SHEQ obligations.
• Establish project OHS&E objectives and targets.
• Promote the continual improvement of best practice OHS&E and Quality systems and behaviours.
• Coach others in the identification and management of ethical issues associated with area of work or practice area.
• Maintain Chartered status or equivalent.
• As a technical leader proactively maintain effective networks and relevant industry relationships to gain cooperation in meeting business and client outcomes.
• Participation in company development initiative, such as the Professional Associate Program and/or PANs.
• Seek information to understand client needs and effectively anticipate and meet client needs and encourage client focus in colleagues including coordination with other disciplines.
• Provide technical review of work performed by the team.
• Promote a culture of technical excellence within the civil team.
• Review and verify engineering drawings and reports.
• Provide expert technical input to a diverse range of projects in line with WSP quality system and client requirements.
• Responsibility for client satisfaction and loyalty for the area of expertise.
• Is a leader in Safety in Design.
• Establishes project scope, time and cost management systems. Coaches others in managing competing demands.
• Provide technical leads on multiple projects of varying complexity and size.
• Establishes project quality and risk management systems.
• Establishes project communications and integration systems.
• Understanding of contracts and commercials as related to project delivery.
• Mentor junior engineers in technical, project delivery and client relationships.
• Provide expert input to pursuits and proposals.
• Recognise the achievements and success of individuals and the team.
• Assist team manaers and executives in the selection and recruitment of employees.

Qualifications (minimum and desirable):

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Civil Engineering, or any equivalent experience
• Preferably a Licensed Civil Engineer
• Member of chartered status of CPENG (Desired)

Experience, Capabilities & Competencies:

• Typically, 10 – 15 years' experience.
• Extensive knowledge of relevant industry related Australian standards, local Road Authority Standards and other road and civil design standards.
• Extensive knowledge of road and civil design skills in their area of expertise, with high level skills in relevant software (eg 12D).
• Demonstrated competence in providing key technical expertise and leading the development of the civil design philosophy across a broad range of high-profile projects.
• Competent in managing risk on substantial projects.
• High level skills in applying safety in design practises and processes.
• Demonstrated multiple instances of delivering best client outcomes/options which have saved the client cost and/or time.
• Strong experience in building client relationships and business development.
• Competent in monitoring and managing the scope of multiple projects of varying complexity and size.
• Competency in preparing and reviewing high level and complex technical reports.
• Contributes to and drives quality proposals and pursuits.
• Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.
• Built technical capability of others (training and mentoring) and transferred technical expertise within the organisation.
• Profile as a civil leader with clients and industry bodies.
