Principal Structural Engineer, Bridges and Civil Structures

The Principal Structural Engineer is responsible providing technical expertise on a range of projects. Managing a variety of small to medium-sized projects and produce high-quality reports and maintaining the existing client base.

Main activities and responsibilities includes:

• Comply with all role-specific Safety, Health, Environment, & Quality (SHEQ) obligations
• Comply with the WSP OH&S System and development of site-specific health and safety plans as well as WSP Quality System and Code of Ethics.
• Represent WSP to a professional standard at all times.
• Undertakes a variety of projects, including bridges, tunnels, rail, and miscellaneous steel and concrete structures.
• Provides the necessary technical leadership, mentoring and guidance to the structural design staff to assure total quality of all engineering efforts.
• Assists the Transport Bridges and Structures Team Lead and Project Managers in delivering quality design services and meet revenue projections and client expectations.
• Develops the appropriate quality engineering solutions, coordinates the activities of other group members, and assists in production needed to meet schedules.
• Ensures that Design Standards are met and that design quality procedures are observed.
• May serve as the Project Manager when dictated by project size, complexity or request.
• Evaluate technical and logistic problem/s of personnel to ensure smooth flow of operation and maintain a high standard of quality work.
• Looks into business opportunities for WSP or assists in proposals related to line of expertise.
• Keeps abreast of new developments and methods relevant to area of expertise.
• Adheres to prescribed Design Standards and Design Quality Procedures.
• Conscientiously work towards the group's objectives and adhere to the company's policy.
• Evaluate staff performance in line with HR procedures.
• Carry out cross-discipline reviews, constructability checks, and clash detection reviews
• Performs tasks assigned by Bridges Discipline Lead/ Regional Executive in line with his experience, discipline, or qualifications.

Qualifications (minimum and desirable):

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Civil Engineering, or any equivalent experience
• Preferably a Licensed Civil Engineer
• Member of chartered status of CPENG (Desired)

Experience, Capabilities & Competencies:

• At least fifteen (15+) years relevant work experience.
• Proven structural design experience for bridges, ground support, tunnel linings, and/or retaining walls.
• Proven knowledge in using software for structural analysis e.g. MIDAS Civil, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design (ASBD), STAAD, SPACE GASS or similar software packages e.g. Microstran, CSI Bridge
• Proficiency in Projectwise, Blue Beam Revu, AutoCAD/Microstation/Revit, MS Word and MS Excel is also expected.
• Competent and experienced in providing technical expertise across a broad range of projects without supervision.
• High-level skills in applying safety in design practices and processes.
• Knowledgeable of local and/or international design standards.
• Preferably with experience on Australian projects
• Proven ability to provide key technical expertise across a broad range of high-profile projects. Strong experience in a consultancy environment.
• Advanced knowledge in the application of Digital Engineering/BIM processes and workflows on projects.
• Demonstrated competence in Digital Engineering and BIM-based inter-disciplinary coordination, constructability and/or project controls.
• Consistently demonstrates 'good consultant' principles
• Demonstrated experience in preparing and reviewing complex technical project reports in line with Delegation of Authority (DOA). Has a quality mindset.
• Competent in monitoring and managing the scope (including variations) of multiple projects of varying complexity and size and guiding the work of others
• Demonstrated multiple instances of delivering the best client outcomes/options which have saved the client costs/time and addressed their requirements.
• High-level skills in applying safety in design practices and processes. Mentors others in principles.
• Complies with applicable legislation, standards, guidelines, and project specifications. Mentor others.
• Competent in identifying and managing risk on substantial projects.
• Extensive experience in client relationships. Ability to communicate complex technical issues to clients and guide the client through regulatory processes.
• Extensive experience in applying and coaching others in QA and OH&S systems.
• Built technical, operational, and commercial capabilities of others through training, mentoring, and coaching.
• Experience in supervising graduates and managing professionals, seniors and associates.
