About Our Romance Novel Editor Position We're seeking an experienced and skilled Romance Editor to join our team. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of romance novels, from draft to polished novel. You'll be responsible for guiding manuscripts through the editing process, elevating characters, refining emotional arcs, and sharpening pacing to keep readers engaged. This is a hands-on editorial role that requires someone with a deep understanding of the romance market, its tropes, and its expectations. Some key responsibilities of the job include:
  • Developmental & Line Editing: Strengthen pacing, characterization, and trope delivery while maintaining voice.
  • Scene Drafting: Write seamless new material when needed, matching the author's style.
  • Copyediting: Ensure every line is clean, consistent, and immersive.
  • Genre Coaching: Keep heat levels, payoffs, and beats aligned with contemporary romance expectations.
  • Collaboration: Deliver feedback via tracked changes, editorial letters, and occasional live calls.
  • Multi-Project Management: Balance multiple manuscripts while maintaining high editorial standards.
In order to be successful in this role, you should have the following skills and qualifications: The ideal candidate will have:
  • 3+ years of professional editing experience in contemporary romance.
  • 3+ published romance novels edited (please provide ISBNs or retailer links).
  • Strong ghostwriting or scene drafting experience.
  • Advanced command of grammar, dialogue pacing, and formatting.
  • Ability to spot sagging middles, sharpen arcs, and elevate tropes.
  • A deep love for romance — you know the difference between a HEA and a HFN, and why it matters.
