We are currently seeking a Senior VoIP Engineer for one of our clients—an established and rapidly growing internet and network service provider in New York City. This company supports thousands of business and residential clients and continues to expand its fiber and wireless footprint across the city.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Senior Director of Engineering, the Senior VoIP Engineer will be responsible for managing and enhancing the organization's VoIP and wireless infrastructure. This role provides technical leadership for highly resilient voice systems, ensuring availability, scalability, and security. The ideal candidate will be skilled in VoIP design, implementation, and troubleshooting, with a strong understanding of network operations and voice technologies.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage end-to-end voice infrastructure initiatives — from gathering business requirements to designing, implementing, and maintaining reliable VoIP architectures.
• Provide Tier 4 technical support for enterprise customers, resolving issues across voice, video, and data systems.
• Coordinate and support installation, maintenance, monitoring, and troubleshooting of VoIP equipment and systems.
• Ensure operational SLAs and internal procedures are met, while maintaining strong communication with internal teams and external partners.
• Respond to service tickets, prepare root cause analyses and outage reports, and provide timely issue resolution, including off-hours or weekend support when required.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (engineering, operations, customer support, product) to deliver high-quality solutions.
• Serve as the primary VoIP engineering contact for vendors and suppliers during system changes, installations, and upgrades.
• Stay current on VoIP technologies, protocols, and security standards (e.g., STIR/SHAKEN, robocall mitigation) and apply them proactively.
• Manage least-cost routing (LCR), carrier rate decks, and traffic translations, including regular LERG updates.
• Maintain detailed network documentation, configuration records, and system performance reports.
• Perform performance analysis and optimization through testing and simulation.

Technical Expertise

• Proficiency in call agents and SBCs such as Metaswitch, Permeta, or Alianza.
• In-depth knowledge of VoIP protocols (SIP, H.323, MGCP, RTP) and codecs (G.711, G.729).
• Strong experience with hosted voice, SIP trunking, and session border controllers.
• Familiarity with E9-1-1 and NG9-1-1 standards.
• Hands-on experience with major platforms such as Avaya, Cisco, Oracle, BroadSoft, Microsoft UC, Polycom, and Adtran.
• Solid understanding of IP networking fundamentals: IPv4/IPv6, VLANs, routing, switching, firewalls, and QoS.
• Experience designing and deploying carrier-grade SIP solutions.
• Working knowledge of cloud technologies (AWS preferred).
• Scripting and automation skills (Python, Bash) highly desirable.
• Telecommunications industry background required.

• 8+ years of hands-on experience supporting telecom VoIP infrastructure.
• Proven expertise in troubleshooting, problem-solving, and optimizing VoIP systems.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to manage complex SLAs across multi-vendor environments.
• Collaborative team player with excellent time management and analytical skills.
• Familiarity with IT process automation and emerging VoIP trends.
