The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Data Engineer to take primary ownership of our data transformation layer and help us scale a modern data stack built on GCP, dbt, and Looker. This is a critical role where you'll be responsible for making our data accurate, reliable, and easy to use for analytics and decision-making.You'll lead key projects across data ingestion and transformation, mentor a strong junior data engineer, and work end-to-end—from scoping and design through implementation, testing, and deployment. The ideal candidate is proactive, comfortable making technical decisions, and excited to deeply understand our business so that the data models reflect how the company truly works.

What You'll Do

Own the Transformation Layer

  • Design, build, and maintain our data transformation and modeling layer using dbt.
  • Define and enforce best practices for dbt structure, testing, documentation, and performance.

Develop and Maintain Ingestion Pipelines

  • Work with and extend our custom data ingestion functions on GCP using Python and Cloud Run.
  • Improve pipeline reliability, scalability, and cost efficiency.

Lead and Mentor

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to our junior data engineer (strong coder who benefits from clear direction and standards).
  • Set expectations for code quality, testing, and documentation through reviews and pairing sessions.

End-to-End Project Ownership

  • Scope, plan, and execute data projects, especially around data ingestion and transformation.
  • Take ownership of projects from initial requirements and design through implementation, deployment, and post-launch improvements.

Champion Best Practices & Business Logic

  • Invest time in deeply understanding our business model, metrics, and workflows.
  • Translate that understanding into robust, scalable data models and a reliable semantic layer.

Innovate with AI

  • Use AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Cursor, etc.) in your day-to-day development for code, testing, documentation, and problem solving.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to leverage AI across our data platform to improve speed and quality.

Collaborate Effectively

  • Work closely with stakeholders across the company (analytics, product, operations, leadership) to understand their data needs.
  • Communicate trade-offs clearly and deliver high-quality, practical solutions.

Quality, Orchestration & Monitoring

  • Use Dagster to orchestrate data workflows and ensure reliable, observable pipeline runs.
  • Leverage Monte Carlo (and other tools) to monitor data quality, lineage, and pipeline health.
  • Help build and maintain automated data tests and health checks.

What You'll Need (Must-Haves)

  • Proven experience in a senior data engineering role or equivalent.
  • Deep, hands-on experience with dbt for data transformation and modeling in a production environment.
  • Expert-level Python skills for data ingestion and processing.
  • Hands-on experience building and operating services on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), including Cloud Run or similar serverless/containerized services.
  • Demonstrated use of AI tools in software development (for coding, debugging, testing, or analysis).
  • Proficiency with GitHub for version control (branching, pull requests, code review).
  • Ability to scope and deliver projects independently, working with stakeholders to clarify requirements.
  • Strong written and spoken English communication skills.
  • Comfortable working remotely and collaborating across time zones.
