L3 Network Engineer

Job Description

The L3 Network Engineer is responsible for providing advanced technical expertise to support, troubleshoot, design, and enhance enterprise network infrastructures. This role requires strong interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with onsite staff, cross-functional IT teams, vendors, and customers. The engineer will respond to escalated issues, coordinate network changes, and participate in infrastructure projects. Most of our clients are small medium enterprises with up to 60 employees.

Key Responsibilities:

Advanced Support & Troubleshooting

  • Receive and resolve Tier 1 and Tier 2 escalations related to LAN, WAN, VPN, routing, switching, and firewall issues.
  • Analyze and resolve complex network infrastructure problems using advanced diagnostic tools and methodologies.
  • Provide timely and effective updates to customers, stakeholders, and internal teams on ticket progress and resolutions.

Network Operations & Maintenance

  • Perform Level 1–2 network change requests in accordance with established policies and change management processes.
  • Participate in scheduled and emergency network maintenance windows, including off-hours work when required.
  • Monitor and maintain local and remote networks to ensure high availability and optimal performance.

Network Design & Deployment

  • Contribute to network design activities and collaborate with senior engineers and architects on scalable network solutions.
  • Coordinate and oversee circuit installations, network deployments, infrastructure upgrades, and staging activities.
  • Interpret and work with network diagrams for troubleshooting, implementation, and documentation.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Create, update, and maintain accurate technical documentation, network diagrams, and installation guides.
  • Assist with project documentation, reporting, and general coordination with project teams.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Work closely with onsite staff, peers, vendors, and support teams with a cooperative and flexible approach.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills when interacting with technical and non-technical users.

The ideal candidate must possess strong knowledge and hands-on experience in:

Routing & Switching

  • OSPF, EIGRP, BGP
  • VLAN, SNMP, NTP, Spanning Tree Protocol
  • LACP / Link Aggregation
  • MPLS, T1/T3, Metro Ethernet
  • DMVPN, GRE, IPsec point-to-point tunnels

Network Technologies & Platforms

  • Cisco IOS, IOS-XR, and basic NX-OS
  • Cisco Meraki (WiFi systems)
  • Omada
  • Cisco VoIP technologies
  • FortiGate NGFW or equivalent firewall technologies

Server Management

  • Build server for small offices
  • Troubleshoot server issues
