The Veterinary Assistant plays a vital role in supporting veterinarians and technicians in both clinic settings and field-based spay/neuter programs. This position requires a compassionate approach to animal care, strong technical skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with pet owners and team members.

Pre-operative Support:

  • Prepare surgical areas and equipment for procedures
  • Assist in patient intake and evaluation
  • Administer pre-operative medications and anesthesia under supervision
  • Safely restrain and handle cats and dogs of varying temperaments

Surgical Assistance:

  • Support veterinarians during spay/neuter surgeries
  • Maintain sterile technique and assist with instrument handling
  • Monitor anesthesia levels and patient vitals throughout procedures

Post-operative Care:

  • Perform post-op procedures such as ear-tipping or tattooing for identification
  • Monitor recovery and provide supportive care to patients
  • Document observations and report concerns promptly
  • Ensure proper discharge instructions are communicated to pet owners

Client Communication:

  • Provide clear, compassionate guidance to fur parents regarding pre- and post-op care
  • Educate clients on vaccination schedules and basic pet health
  • Address questions and concerns with professionalism and empathy

Emergency Response:

  • Assist in stabilizing patients during emergency situations
  • Follow protocols for triage and urgent care under veterinary direction

Event Workflow & Compliance:

  • Adhere to established procedures during spay/neuter events
  • Coordinate with team members to ensure smooth operations
  • Maintain accurate records and uphold safety standards

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required)
  • Completion of a Veterinary Assistant Certificate or related short course (preferred but not mandatory)
  • Basic knowledge of veterinary terminology, animal anatomy, and pharmacology is a plus
  • At least 6 months to 1 year of hands-on experience in a veterinary clinic, animal shelter, or spay/neuter program
  • Prior involvement in surgical assistance, anesthesia monitoring, or emergency response is highly desirable
  • Experience handling both cats and dogs, especially in high-volume or outreach settings
