A Front of House (FOH) job involves direct interaction with customers in a hospitality or service setting, encompassing duties like greeting guests, managing reservations, taking orders, serving food and drinks, handling payments, and maintaining a clean and orderly environment. FOH staff are responsible for ensuring a positive customer experience from arrival to departure, acting as the first point of contact, and coordinating with back-of-house teams to meet guest needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Customer Service: Greet guests, manage seating, answer questions, and handle complaints to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Order Management: Take orders accurately, transmit them to the kitchen, and ensure timely service of food and beverages.
  • Sales and Payments: Sell food, drinks, and merchandise, and handle cash and credit card transactions.
  • Environment Maintenance: Maintain a clean, presentable, and comfortable dining or public area.
  • Coordination: Work with kitchen and other service staff to ensure smooth operations and timely delivery of services.
  • Staff Support: Assist in training new staff members and set an example for other team members.

Common FOH Roles

  • Host/Hostess: Manages reservations, greets guests, and seats them at tables.
  • Server/Waiter/Waitress: Takes orders, serves food and drinks, and may handle payments.
  • Bartender: Prepares and serves alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, sometimes at the bar.
  • Runner: Delivers food and drinks from the kitchen to the tables.
  • Busser: Clears tables, maintains cleanliness, and ensures tables are set for new guests.
