Position Overview

We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Bookkeeper to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with Australian accounting standards, and supporting day-to-day financial operations. This role requires strong knowledge of Australian GST, payroll requirements, and accounting software such as Xero or MYOB.

Key Responsibilities

1. Financial Recordkeeping

  • Maintain and update accounting records, including general ledger, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
  • Reconcile bank, credit card, and loan accounts regularly.
  • Manage supplier invoices, bill payments, and debtor follow-ups.

2. Payroll & Compliance

  • Process payroll in accordance with Australian employment legislation and industry awards.
  • Calculate superannuation, leave accruals, PAYG withholding, and payroll tax.
  • Submit Single Touch Payroll (STP) updates.

3. BAS & ATO Compliance

  • Prepare and lodge Business Activity Statements (BAS), Instalment Activity Statements (IAS), and other ATO compliance requirements.
  • Ensure GST, PAYG, and super obligations are accurately recorded and submitted on time.

4. Reporting & Analysis

  • Prepare monthly/quarterly financial reports, including profit & loss, balance sheets, and cash flow summaries.
  • Provide insights and recommendations to support financial decision-making.

5. Software & Systems

  • Maintain financial records using accounting systems such as Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks, or Reckon.
  • Assist with system improvements, software integrations, and process optimisation.

6. Administrative Functions

  • Assist with budget preparation and cost control initiatives.
  • Liaise with external accountants, auditors, and the ATO as needed.
  • Support general administrative tasks related to finance and operations.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Bookkeeper in Australia (1–3+ years preferred).
  • Strong understanding of Australian accounting standards.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of GST rules, BAS preparation, and ATO compliance.
  • Competency with accounting software (e.g., Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks).
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and/or Google Sheets.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Xero or MYOB certified advisor status.
  • Experience with payroll processing under modern awards.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based document systems (Hubdoc, Dext, etc.).
  • Experience working with accountants or in a public practice environment.
