Primary Function:

The core responsibilities of a civil structural engineer on substation and transmission line projects involve ensuring the safety, stability, and integrity of all supporting structures. Their duties range from initial design and analysis to on-site inspection and risk mitigation. The engineer is responsible for protecting these critical power structures from environmental and operational loads

For substation projects

Structural engineers design and analyze the infrastructure within a substation fence, which includes specialized equipment and buildings.

· Foundation design: Designing foundations for heavy electrical equipment like transformers, circuit breakers, and bus supports. The engineer must account for dynamic and static loads and consider site-specific geotechnical data to ensure a stable foundation.

· Steel structure design: Designing steel structures, gantries, and support frames to hold equipment and bus conductors. This involves using structural analysis software and adhering to industry standards like those from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

· Building design: Creating structural designs for control buildings, switchgear shelters, and other on-site structures, making sure they comply with the National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP).

· Cable and equipment support: Designing cable trenches, pits, and support systems for cables, ensuring proper clearances, and managing environmental factors like fire and water.

· Containment design: Designing oil spill containment facilities to protect the environment from potential spills from transformers and other oil-filled equipment.

For transmission line projects

In transmission line projects, structural engineers focus on the design and structural integrity of the transmission towers and the overall line layout.

· Tower design and analysis: Designing and analyzing the transmission towers to withstand environmental forces, such as high winds, seismic activity, ice, and extreme temperatures, in addition to the weight and tension of the conductors.

· Layout and spotting: Creating plan and profile drawings to properly "spot" or locate towers along the transmission line route. This ensures correct conductor clearance from the ground, buildings, and other obstacles.

· Loading calculations: Performing sag and tension calculations for conductors and ground wires to determine the mechanical loads on the towers.

· Foundation and anchorage design: Designing tower foundations and anchorage systems based on the loads from the tower and the local soil conditions assessed through geotechnical reports.

· Material selection: Recommending appropriate materials for tower components, conductors, and hardware to ensure durability and cost-effectiveness.
