Job Summary

The Laboratory Technician/ Phlebotomist is responsible for the blood extraction and clerical activities in charging, accepting specimens and encoding laboratory results. He/She is responsible for cleaning and preparing basic laboratory materials, equipments and the workplace that will help the medical technologist in the performance of laboratory tests.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The position holder shall undertake the following functions:

  • Performs job functions consistent with the corporate vision and mission statements and the core values of the organization.
  • Receives written requisitions from physician for routine or special laboratory tests.
  • Obtains laboratory specimens, such as urine, blood and sputum, from wards or directly from patient, using established laboratory techniques.
  • Assists the medical technologist in basic preparations of blood and urine specimens for analysis of examinations.
  • Prepares slides for microscopic analysis as necessary.
  • Posts and files laboratory results to record files and laboratory files and laboratory reports.
  • Assign in laboratory reception for charging and receiving of specimens.
  • Enters test result in computers, transmit in-patient records, and submits out-patient reports.
  • Identifies and labels all specimens to be retained and files them for further reference or research.
  • Assists in the conduct of regular inventory.
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned to or required of the job.
  • Undertakes work activities in conformity with the institutional guidelines on safety and infection control.
  • Attends training programs and learning sessions for the enhancement of professional, technical, and personal proficiencies; participates in the Quality Assurance program.
  • Performs such other duties and responsibilities analogous, germane or related to and/or implied from the above enumeration of duties and responsibilities.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education

Graduate of B.S. Medical Technology or Nursing (with Phlebotomy training).

Experience

At least 6 months to 1 year of practical work experience as Laboratory Technician in a clinical laboratory.
