About the Role

We are seeking a Credit Controller who will play a pivotal role in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of merchant debit transactions and the recovery of outstanding payments.

This position requires a detail-oriented professional with strong communication and problem-solving skills who can manage recurring debit transactions and payment recovery activities while providing exceptional support to both internal teams and customers. The role combines transactional responsibilities with proactive issue resolution, dispute management, and direct merchant engagement.

The Credit Controller will also collaborate cross-functionally to safeguard company assets, ensure compliance with processes, and minimize financial risk to the business.

Reporting to the Senior Financial Accountant, you will be responsible for:

Merchant Debit Management:

  • Oversee debit transactions to merchants/customers, including Terminal Rental Fees, Merchant Service Fees (MSFs), chargebacks, and dispute-related debits.

  • Identify and resolve failed debit transactions, including reprocessing and escalating unresolved items.

  • Monitor daily debit failures, investigate causes (e.g., insufficient funds, closed accounts, blocked mandates), and implement corrective measures to minimize repeat issues.

Chargeback & Dispute Recovery

  • Manage debits related to chargebacks and ensure recovery actions are completed.

  • Work with the Merchant Support Team and Customer Service when recovery debits fail, escalating issues as needed.

  • Monitor direct debit dispute-related emails (e.g., from Zepto) and take prompt corrective action to resolve cases efficiently.

Ticket & Case Management

  • Record failed debits, disputes, and recovery actions in the ticketing system (Zoho) and in the in-house CRM (Phoenix) to maintain accurate and comprehensive records.

  • Provide clear investigation notes, updates, and instructions for internal teams.

Merchant & Cross-Functional Communication

  • Collaborate with internal teams (Customer Service, Accounts, Merchant Support Team) to resolve queries and disputes that may delay payments

  • Contact merchants directly to resolve outstanding debit issues, advising on corrective actions such as updating bank details or reinstating debit authorities.

  • Provide excellent customer service by balancing professionalism, persistence, and empathy in payment recovery.

  • Escalate complex or unresolved cases to senior team members when appropriate.

Asset Recovery

  • Contact non-trading merchants to arrange the recovery of company terminals and other assets in coordination with logistics teams

  • Follow through until assets are returned and merchant accounts are fully closed

Reporting & Analysis

  • Daily/Weekly reporting on debit failures, recoveries and outstanding balances.

  • Trend analysis

About you and the talents we are looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in finance or a related field

  • Minimum 2–3-year experience in credit control, accounts receivable, or direct debit/payment recovery role, preferably within the payments industry

  • Strong knowledge ofdirect debit processes, payment recovery, and customer account management.

  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with a strong customer service orientation.

  • High attention to detail and accuracy in handling financial transactions and record keeping.
