The Quantity Surveyor (QS) is primarily responsible for accurate quantity take-offs, ensuring precise measurement of materials, labour, and project components based on drawings and specifications. The role supports the preparation of BOQs, cost estimates, and tender documentation, providing essential data for budgeting, procurement, and project costing. The QS also assists in cost monitoring, valuation of works, and evaluation of variations or claims, helping maintain cost control throughout the project lifecycle. Attention to detail, consistency in measurement, and adherence to standard methodologies are key to performing this
role effectively.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Conduct accurate quantity take-offs based on architectural, structural, MEP, and specialty
drawings.
• Prepare and update Bills of Quantities (BOQs) in accordance with standard methods of
measurement.
• Develop cost estimates, material summaries, and cost breakdowns for budgeting and tendering
purposes.
• Assist in the preparation of tender documents, including scope of work, technical requirements,
and pricing forms.
• Coordinate with designers, engineers, and project managers to clarify drawings, specifications, and
site requirements.
• Review and verify contractor quotations, variations, and claims to ensure accuracy and compliance
with project standards.
• Support cost monitoring and cost control activities, including tracking quantities, material usage,
and budget updates.
• Maintain organized project records, quantity files, and documentation for audits and reporting.
• Prepare regular progress and cost reports as required by management.
• Provide assistance in procurement activities, such as sourcing prices and evaluating supplier
proposals.
• Ensure all work follows established measurement standards and company procedures.
Educational Requirements
• Degree in Civil Engineering
• 5+ years of experience as a Quantity Surveyor in the construction industry
Skills and Competencies Required
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel, with strong skills in data analysis, reporting, and documentation.
• Extensive experience in BOQ preparation, including tender documentation, cost breakdowns, and
detailed quantity take-offs.
• Well-versed in Standard Methods of Measurement for accurate and consistent quantification.
• Hands-on experience with PlanSwift for digital take-off and estimation workflows.
• Familiarity with SAP; knowledge of its modules is considered an advantage.
• Strong understanding of contracts, cost estimates, tender processes, and claims management,
ensuring effective commercial and project controls.
