Description

The Executive Director of Development and Strategic Engagement will serve as a key leader in advancing the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles's mission as the Center for Community Well-Being. This position will drive comprehensive fundraising strategies across corporate philanthropy, government funding, and private donor cultivation while securing strategic partnerships that amplify our impact in Healthy Living, Youth Development, and Social Impact. The role requires exceptional relationship-building skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to articulate the LA Y's vision of community well-being to diverse stakeholder audiences. The Executive Director will work collaboratively across all areas of impact to ensure sustainable funding for evidence-based programs and initiatives that transform lives and strengthen communities throughout Los Angeles County.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of seven (7+) years of progressive leadership experience in development, fundraising, or strategic partnerships, preferably in nonprofit, social services, or community health organizations
  • Demonstrated success in securing major gifts, corporate partnerships, and government funding with a track record of managing portfolios of $1M+ annually
  • Experience with strategic partnership development and relationship management with corporate, government, and philanthropic sectors
  • Grant writing and management experience with federal, state, and local funding sources preferred

Specialized Skills

    • Exceptional relationship-building and communication skills with ability to engage diverse stakeholders 
    • Strong strategic planning and analytical capabilities with experience in developing comprehensive fundraising strategies 
    • Proven track record in major gift solicitation and donor stewardship 
    • Experience with corporate social responsibility partnerships and cause marketing initiatives
    • Knowledge of government funding processes and public-private partnerships
    • Strong project management and organizational skills with ability to manage multiple complex initiatives
    • Other: Must be able to clear a criminal record background check (DOJ/FBI/CACI).

Work Environment/Minimum Physical Requirements

  • You must have physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Job is performed in a professional office environment with extended periods at computer workstation
  • Job is based out of YMCA center. Hybrid work options may be available
  • Extensive local travel required for donor meetings, corporate partnerships, and community engagement events. All work-related mileage reimbursed
  • Some evening and weekend work required for fundraising events and community functions

Principle Responsibilities

FUNDRAISING STRATEGY & EXECUTION

1. Major Gifts & Individual Donor Development:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive individual donor strategy aligned with organizational priorities
  • Manage portfolio of major gift prospects and donors ($10,000+ annual giving capacity)
  • Conduct prospect research and qualification to build robust pipeline
  • Execute donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities
  • Design and implement donor recognition and engagement programs

2. Corporate Philanthropy & Partnership Development:

  • Build strategic relationships with corporate partners to advance Center for Community Well-Being initiatives
  • Develop cause marketing partnerships that align corporate social responsibility goals with Y programs
  • Negotiate corporate sponsorships for signature events and programs
  • Create employee engagement opportunities for corporate partners
  • Manage corporate foundation grant applications and reporting

3. Government Relations & Public Funding:

  • Collaborate with Director of Government Grants on strategy development
  • Build relationships with elected officials and government agencies
  • Identify and pursue public-private partnership opportunities
  • Support advocacy efforts that advance organizational mission
  • Coordinating with government relations activities

4. Strategic Partnership Development:

  • Identify and cultivate strategic alliances that advance mission impact
  • Develop partnerships with foundations, healthcare systems, educational institutions, and community organizations
  • Negotiate partnership agreements and memorandums of understanding
  • Ensure partnership alignment with organizational values and goals
  • Monitor and evaluate partnership effectiveness and impact

FUNDRAISING OPERATIONS & MANAGEMENT

1. Development Planning & Strategy:

    • Lead development of annual and multi-year fundraising plans
    • Set and track fundraising goals across all revenue streams
    • Conduct market analysis and competitive landscape assessment
    • Develop case statements and messaging for various audiences
    • Coordinate with communications team on development materials

2. Revenue Diversification & Growth:

    • Identify and develop new revenue streams aligned with organizational mission
    • Research emerging funding opportunities and philanthropic trends
    • Develop innovative partnership models and social enterprise opportunities
    • Create scalable funding strategies for program expansion
    • Analyze market opportunities for mission-driven revenue generation

3. Data Management & Analysis:

  • Oversee donor database management and data integrity
  • Analyze fundraising metrics and prepare regular performance reports
  • Track return on investment for development activities
  • Conduct prospective research and wealth screening initiatives
  • Maintain confidential donor information and communication records
