Job Description

The Waste Segregation Personnel is responsible for the proper handling, sorting, and disposal of all hospital-generated waste in accordance with institutional policies, Department of Health (DOH) guidelines, and environmental regulations. The role ensures that infectious, hazardous, recyclable, and general wastes are correctly segregated to maintain a safe, clean, and compliant healthcare environment that protects patients, staff, and the community.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Sort and segregate waste at collection points according to prescribed categories (infectious, pathological, sharps, chemical, pharmaceutical, recyclable, and general waste).
  2. Ensure all waste is placed in the correct color-coded containers and is properly labeled following DOH standards.
  3. Safely handle and transport waste from departments to the designated temporary storage area.
  4. Check for proper sealing, packaging, and weight limits of waste bags and containers.
  5. Adhere strictly to the hospital's Waste Management Program and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols.
  6. Follow DOH Administrative Order No Hospital Waste Management Manual) and DENR guidelines for hazardous waste disposal.
  7. Utilize proper PPE at all times to avoid exposure to infectious or hazardous materials.
  8. Report any improper waste disposal practices to the Housekeeping Supervisor or Division Manager.
  9. Maintain accurate daily records of waste volume per category.
  10. Assist in documenting waste pickup schedules and coordinating with accredited waste disposal contractors.
  11. Participate in routine audits and assessments of waste segregation practices.
  12. Ensure the cleanliness and orderliness of waste collection points and storage areas.
  13. Assist in disinfecting waste bins and disposal equipment as scheduled.
  14. Support the overall housekeeping operations during downtime or as assigned.
  15. Attends and participates in meetings and seminars, if necessary.
Job Qualifications
  • At least High School Graduate or TESDA-certified housekeeping-related course is preferred.
  • With or without experience; experience in a hospital or healthcare environment is an advantage.
  • Background in housekeeping, sanitation, or environmental services is preferred.
  • Knowledge of waste categorization and segregation practices.
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and handle hazardous materials properly.
  • Physically fit; able to lift waste bags and handle equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and compliance-oriented.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and communicate clearly with staff.
  • Responsible and highly disciplined.
  • Alert and safety-conscious.
  • Honest, trustworthy, and dependable.
  • Cooperative and able to work as part of a team.
