SESA Biodiversity Expert

Job Description:

We are seeking an experienced Biodiversity Expert to support the Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment (SESA) process. The specialist will provide technical expertise in biodiversity and ecosystem management, ensuring that environmental sustainability and conservation priorities are effectively integrated into transport sector policies, plans, and programs.

The role involves conducting biodiversity assessments, developing mitigation and management measures, and contributing to strategic recommendations that balance infrastructure development with environmental protection.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead biodiversity and ecological assessments for the SESA, ensuring compliance with national regulations and international standards.
• Identify, evaluate, and map sensitive habitats, species, and ecosystems that may be impacted by transport plans or projects.
• Propose biodiversity conservation and management strategies, including mitigation and offset measures.
• Support integration of biodiversity considerations into transport planning frameworks and decision-making processes.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to align environmental, social, and technical objectives.
• Engage with key stakeholders, including environmental agencies, NGOs, and local communities.
• Prepare technical reports, recommendations, and presentations on biodiversity-related findings and measures.

Qualifications and Experience:

• University degree(s) in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biology, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
• A postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline is an advantage.
• At least ten (10) years of professional experience, with a minimum of eight (8) years in biodiversity conservation, ecosystem assessment, or related fields.
• Demonstrated experience in conducting environmental or biodiversity assessments for national, regional, provincial, or urban transport plans is a plus.
• Familiarity with international biodiversity conventions, frameworks, and standards (e.g., CBD, IUCN, IFC PS6).
• Strong analytical, report writing, and communication skills in English (both written and spoken).
• Proven ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary and multicultural project environments.
