Job Brief

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Intermediate Tax Accountant with experience in Australian public practice to join a high-performing accounting team. This role will be responsible for preparing individual, company, trust, and partnership tax returns, as well as assisting with tax planning and advisory services for a diverse client base. The ideal candidate will be degree-qualified, have a solid foundation in Australian tax law, and possess excellent skills in Xero and related software.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and lodge individual, company, trust, and partnership tax returns
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements and BAS/IAS lodgements
  • Maintain compliance with ATO regulations and Australian tax law
  • Reconcile accounts and prepare working papers for clients across various industries
  • Liaise with clients to gather required information and clarify queries
  • Support senior accountants and partners with tax planning and advisory tasks
  • Maintain up-to-date records in Xero Practice Manager and other accounting platforms
  • Communicate with the ATO and other regulatory bodies on behalf of clients
  • Identify opportunities for improving compliance and client service processes

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Commerce, or a related field (CPA/CA studies in progress or completed is a plus)
  • Minimum 2 years experience in an Australian public practice accounting firm
  • Excellent working knowledge of Xero, Xero Tax, and Xero Practice Manager
  • Strong understanding of Australian taxation law and compliance obligations
  • Proficiency in preparing financial statements and tax returns for a range of entity types
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail in calculations and documentation
  • Ability to prioritise work and manage deadlines independently

Desirable

  • Experience using other accounting software such as MYOB, QuickBooks, or HandiSoft
  • Prior exposure to SMSF compliance and reporting (optional)
  • Familiarity with GST, FBT, CGT and Division 7A rules
  • Understanding of client relationship management in a public practice environment

Software Proficiency

  • Xero, Xero Tax, Xero Practice Manager
  • Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • ATO portals and online services (e.g., Online Services for Agents)
  • MYOB, QuickBooks, or other accounting platforms (advantageous)
