Rust Engineering Expert

Discover the opportunity to become a Rust engineering expert and drive innovation in system-level services.

As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for designing and implementing well-tested and well-documented software in Rust. Your expertise will be instrumental in advocating for Rust adoption within Canonical and upstream projects.

Key responsibilities include identifying projects and codebases that could benefit from Rust adoption, debugging and fixing issues encountered by users, participating in engineering processes through code and architectural reviews, collaborating with community and colleagues on technical specifications, seeking improvements to engineering and operations practices, and in some cases, deploying and operating services developed by the team.

We are looking for an exceptional individual with a strong academic track record, undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, and experience building, deploying, and operating distributed systems and APIs. A drive to go above-and-beyond expectations, well-organised self-starting approach, ability to deliver to schedule, appreciation of diversity, polite and effective communication skills, and professional manner interacting with colleagues, partners, and community are essential.

Experience designing and writing high-quality Rust software on Linux, as well as passion for Linux at the system level, are highly valued. Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability are also required. The ideal candidate will possess a personal drive to meet commitments, result-oriented mindset, and ability to travel twice a year for company events.

Nice-to-have skills include experience developing for Ubuntu, knowledge of LXD, MicroK8s, SnapD, IoT, Juju, Ubuntu Core, Ubuntu Pro, performance engineering, and security.
