Software Engineering Role Overview

This is a mid-to-senior level engineering position within our digital workplace team. As a software engineer, you will play a key role in designing and delivering web-based systems and SAAS solutions.

  • You will be working closely with a distributed team to build new tools, dashboards, and analytics that empower colleagues, managers, and executives to make better decisions and deliver better work.
About the Job

We are looking for an experienced software engineer who can design and deliver web-based systems and SAAS solutions. The ideal candidate will have expertise in two or more of the following areas: backend web service programming, data analytics, statistical analysis, natural language processing, sentiment analysis, machine learning, and data visualisation.

The successful candidate will have a passion for experimentation and analytics, and will use their skills to build tomorrow's tech organisation.

As a senior web engineer at Canonical, you need an analytical, data-driven mind and a passion to connect and make sense of interesting data from APIs.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Design and deliver web-based systems and SAAS solutions
  2. Provide new insights into the Canonical workplace experience
  3. Enable new processes and improve existing workflows
  4. Collaborate proactively with a distributed team
  5. Write high-quality code to create new features
  6. Debug issues and produce high-quality code to fix them
  7. Consistently provide high-quality code reviews to other engineers
  8. Discuss ideas and collaborate on finding good solutions
  9. Estimate work, set goals, and meet them
  10. Write project specifications, and epics, and understand the risks
  11. Understand completion criteria and push work to completion
  12. Coaching, mentoring, and providing feedback to more junior members of the team, while always developing yourself
  13. Connect to many data sources and provide insightful visualisations
  14. Database design and architecture for connected systems
  15. Developing new and improved working practices for the company
  16. Providing tooling to support optimised processes
Requirements
  • Expertise in two or more of the following areas: backend web service programming, data analytics, statistical analysis, natural language processing, sentiment analysis, machine learning, and data visualisation
  • A passion for experimentation and analytics
  • An analytical, data-driven mind
  • A passion to connect and make sense of interesting data from APIs
