System Software Engineer

A skilled software engineer is required to work on the Golang programming language and its ecosystem on Ubuntu. This role will deliver the best possible Golang runtime, developer experience, and supporting tooling in Ubuntu.

  • Select, integrate, and package best-of-breed tooling with Ubuntu to improve developer and operator experience with Go.
  • Write high-quality code to create new features.
  • Debug issues and produce high-quality code to fix them.
  • Review code produced by other engineers.
  • Discuss ideas and collaborate on finding good solutions.

This is an exciting opportunity for a software engineer passionate about open-source software, Linux systems, software architectures, and Go programming language. The role requires exceptional academic track record from both high school and university, undergraduate degree in a technical subject or compelling narrative about alternative chosen path, love for technology and working with brilliant people, passion, curiosity, flexibility, articulation, and accountability.

The Ubuntu Foundations Team delivers the core Ubuntu system, the base for the entire Ubuntu family of products and services. This team strives to deliver the latest-best free software components, in an easy-to-use and highly reliable form, leveraging technical excellence of Debian and bringing additional focus and shape to the solutions offered to the industry.

The role entails collaborating proactively with a distributed team, selecting, integrating, and packaging best-of-breed tooling with Ubuntu to improve developer and operator experience with Go, writing high-quality code to create new features, debugging issues, and producing high-quality code to fix them, reviewing code produced by other engineers, discussing ideas, and collaborating on finding good solutions.

The ideal candidate has relevant Go experience, ideally in cloud-native software and Linux, experience in packaging software for Debian and Ubuntu, long-time Linux user, exceptional academic track record, undergraduate degree in a technical subject, love for technology, passion, curiosity, flexibility, articulation, and accountability. Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks long is also required.
