Medical Coder Role Overview

The role of a medical coder involves the accurate assignment of diagnosis and procedure codes to patient records using established coding systems such as ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS. This ensures compliance with relevant rules and regulations.

Patient Categories: Low Acuity Inpatients, OB/NB, Acute Psychiatric Cases, and 1-Day Stays Require Coding.

Responsibilities and Skills
  • Extract and Code Relevant Clinical Information from Medical Records Accurately.
  • Apply Modifiers Correctly and Resolve Coding Edits as Required.
  • Respond to Audits and Implement Necessary Changes to Account Coding Based on Findings.
  • Adhere to AHIMA's Standards of Ethical Coding.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Minimum 1 Year of Experience in Inpatient Medical Record Coding.
  • AHIMA or AAPC Coding Credentials (CPC, CIC, CCS) Are Mandatory Requirements.
