Fire Protection Engineer Job Description

The role of a Fire Protection Engineer is to provide design plans and oversee all aspects of fire protection engineering work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work under the direction of managers on tasks related to fire protection engineering, including but not limited to fire protection requirements, equipment, hazards, firefighting, and detection systems.
  • Recommend changes to procedures and drawings/design documents. Gather and correlate basic engineering data using well-defined procedures, which may include routine and diagnostic testing of components and systems, as well as studies.
  • Apply sound engineering principles to provide timely and cost-effective recommendations. Perform standard fire protection design tasks such as sprinkler design, criteria specification, hydraulic calculations, pump selection, and detection system layout.
  • Review architectural/engineering drawings for conformance with model and local codes, as well as NFPA standards.
  • Research models and local codes, as well as nationally recognized standards, to assist in developing alternate methods of compliance.
  • Develop reports, letters, and memos (as necessary) with assistance from other engineers.
  • Perform hazardous materials assessments in facilities per requirements.
  • Continually expand and improve technical and business skills under own initiative with instruction and guidance from others.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Degree in a related field.
  • Licensed Fire Protection Engineer/Certified Fire Protection Inspector preferred.
  • Minimum five years of related engineering experience (combination of design, field/site, inspection, and product review).
  • Ability to deliver complete design packages, including specifications, cost estimates, schedules, and other documents.
  • Working knowledge of local and international regulatory requirements and industry standards related to fire protection, safety, and detection systems.
  • Knowledgeable about applicable codes and standards, specifically UFC, IBC, NFPA, and BS Standards.
  • Proficiency in communication, both written and oral, with clarity and brevity.
  • Computer literacy with documentation and reports, CAD familiarity.
  • Ability to communicate virtually through Teams, Skype, or Webex.
  • Quick response to technical queries on short notice.
  • Strong work ethic and desire to excel in all assignments.
