As a QS Design Engineer-MPF, you will be responsible for both the technical design and cost estimation of mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection for bidding projects. This role involves developing detailed designs, ensuring compliance with industry standards, estimating costs, managing budgets, and overseeing the project bidding. You will collaborate with the Sales team in securing projects and work with the procurement department for vendors/subcontractors. You will also collaborate with the project management team, design team and other engineering teams to manage the project budget, evaluate BOQ, and variation/change orders.
Responsibilities- Design and drafting: Develop detailed designs and drawings for mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection systems; ensure designs meet project specifications and regulatory requirements.
- Technical analysis: Conduct analyses to ensure designs are efficient, cost-effective, and compliant with standards.
- Cost estimation: Prepare detailed cost estimates for mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection systems, including materials, labor, and equipment; prepare Bills of Quantity (BOQ) and BOM based on tender drawings, ensuring all aspects of work are included.
- Site inspections: Conduct site visits to assess MPF requirements and ensure installations comply with safety standards.
- Contract management: Review and negotiate contracts, monitor contractual obligations and resolve disputes or changes in scope.
- Project budget monitoring: Track project progress, ensuring adherence to performance, budgets and schedules related to MPF; work with project management and design teams to keep the project within the approved BOQ and BOM.
- Value engineering: Conduct value engineering exercises to optimize project costs while maintaining quality and performance.
- Documentation: Maintain design documentation, including drawings and calculations; keep detailed records of design changes, testing results, and quality assessments to ensure transparency and traceability.
- Compliance: Ensure all MPF work complies with relevant industry standards, safety regulations, and client policies/procedures; verify designs with relevant codes and standards (e.g., ISO, NFPA, SMACNA, etc.).
- Reporting: Prepare and submit regular project reports to management and key stakeholders; provide insights and recommendations based on cost analysis and project budget performance; evaluate suppliers and contractors.
- Risk management: Identify potential project and budget risks and implement mitigation strategies to prevent cost overruns and avoid technical problems.
- Problem solving: Identify and resolve design/installation issues; investigate design failures/defects in installation, perform root cause analysis, and recommend corrective actions to mitigate future issues.
- Client communication: Communicate effectively with clients, subcontractors, and other teams to ensure project requirements are met; present design concepts and updates to clients and sales teams.
- Team collaboration: Work closely with design, engineering, and project management teams to ensure seamless project execution; coordinate with procurement for materials and services, ensuring cost efficiency and quality standards.
- Continuous improvement: Stay updated on industry trends and advancements to improve design processes and outcomes.
- Knowledge in MEPFS costing
- Ability to recognize contractual obligations of both company and its subcontractors
- Good experience in AutoCAD/MS Office and CCS (Candy) would be preferred but not essential
- Able to review and measure the executed works
- Good knowledge in detailed shop drawing, coordination drawings
- Able to act on own initiative and be proactive
- Good communication skills, both oral and written
- At least 2-5 years experience in Office Fit Out, Joineries, Commercial and Residential industry
