The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is committed to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science, improving the well-being of rice farmers and consumers, and safeguarding the rice-growing environment for future generations. Collaborating with local partners, IRRI focuses on developing advanced rice varieties that offer higher yields, increased resistance to pests and diseases, and enhanced resilience to climate change-induced challenges such as floods and droughts.

Job Purpose

The genome editing program is a concentrated 3-year endeavor aimed at bolstering the CGIAR-National Agriculture Research System (NARS) gene editing pipelines to ensure accessibility and impact for end-users. This initiative will encompass multiple CGIAR centers utilizing genome editing tools to improve and complement ongoing breeding programs. The role demands a strategic outlook for launching new research activities in alignment with market trends and breeders' needs, alongside adherence to compliance protocols and capacity enhancement. The selected candidate will interact with various centers and initiatives within CGIAR, meet CGIAR's reporting standards, establish standardized procedures for responsible stewardship, and develop protocols to verify the absence of foreign DNA in genetically edited products.

Additionally, the position involves contributing to trait development, marker implementation, and phenotyping activities related to flood resistance and regular breeding operations.

This job is based at the IRRI Headquarters in Los Baños, Philippines, welcoming applications from a global pool of candidates.

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Assist the initiative lead in coordinating CGIAR gene editing efforts across centers, standardizing stewardship practices, and facilitating knowledge exchange
  • Establish protocols for transgene-free status validation and oversee initiative reporting
  • Conduct marker design for plant breeding purposes
  • Drive trait development for flood-resistant characteristics and other identified features
  • Enhance flood tolerance phenotyping processes within breeding networks
  • Develop internal capacities at IRRI for trait and marker-related tasks
  • Provide training on trait development and phenotyping to IRRI staff, students, and partners
  • Collaborate closely with CGIAR centers, initiative leaders, and relevant stakeholders
  • Manage CGIAR gene editing stewardship frameworks and associated activities
  • Compile scientific reports in line with donor requirements
  • Organize training sessions and liaise with market intelligence and breeding initiatives for trait alignment
  • Apply marker designs for targeted trait breeding
  • Contribute to flooding-related trait development
Qualifications:
  • 2-3 years of experience in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or Biology at a Post-doctoral Fellow level within IRRI
  • 2-5 years post PhD experience in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or Biology for external candidates
Skills Required:

Mandatory:

  • Understanding of Genome Editing
  • Proficiency in Stewardship practices
  • Familiarity with plant breeding markers

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of Biosafety principles
