The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is focused on alleviating poverty and hunger by advancing rice science, supporting the well-being of rice farmers and consumers, and safeguarding the rice-growing environment. Established in 1960 by the Ford and Rockefeller foundations along with the Philippine government, IRRI operates as an independent, nonprofit organization with a presence in 17 rice-growing nations across Asia and Africa, boasting a team of over 1,000 professionals.

Collaborating with local partners, IRRI is dedicated to creating innovative rice varieties that offer higher yields and increased resilience to pests, diseases, and environmental challenges like floods and droughts, brought on by climate change.

Job Purpose

The genome editing project aims to enhance the CGIAR-National Agriculture Research System (NARS) gene editing pipeline, ensuring accessibility and impact. This initiative involves multiple CGIAR centers utilizing genome editing tools to improve and complement existing breeding programs. The role entails implementing a long-term strategy, launching new research activities based on market insights and breeder feedback, ensuring compliance, capacity building, and fostering collaborations with other centers and initiatives. Key responsibilities include standardized procedures development, stewardship, and GMO-free product validation.

Moreover, the position requires engagement in trait development, marker deployment, and flood-related traits in plant breeding processes.

This opportunity is based at IRRI Headquarters in the Philippines and welcomes applications from international candidates.

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate CGIAR gene editing initiatives
  • Develop protocols for transgene-free status
  • Conduct marker design and deployment
  • Work on trait development for flood-related traits
  • Streamline flood tolerance phenotyping
  • Build capacity in trait development and marker systems
  • Provide training to staff and partners
  • Liaise with CGIAR centers and stakeholders
  • Prepare scientific reports and training materials
  • Collaborate on trait prioritization
  • Apply markers in breeding techniques
Qualifications:
  • 2-3 years experience in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or Biology at IRRI level
  • 2-5 years post PhD work experience in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or Biology for external applicants
Skills Required:
  • Genome Editing knowledge
  • Stewardship understanding
  • Plant breeding marker proficiency
Preferred:
  • Biosafety expertise
