Job Description

As a Senior Tax Accountant, you'll handle bookkeeping, tax compliance, financial reporting, and trust returns. You'll also support clients, supervise junior staff, and implement process improvements while ensuring compliance with Australian tax laws and accounting standards.

The Qualifications We Seek

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related discipline
  • At least 3-5 years' experience in public practice or tax-focused roles, with exposure to Australian tax law, trust structures, and SMSFs
  • Solid knowledge of accounting software such as Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks, or similar, and proficiency in Excel
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and implement process improvements
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to explain complex tax issues clearly to non-accountants
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to meeting deadlines
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a distributed team environment

Your Daily Tasks

  • Bookkeeping and financial reporting - Perform day‑to‑day bookkeeping for multiple clients, including bank reconciliations, accounts payable/receivable, payroll processing and monthly management reports.
  • Tax compliance - Prepare and lodge individual tax returns, company income tax returns, BAS/IAS and FBT returns.
  • Financial reporting - Prepare financial statements for companies, trusts and partnerships; ensure compliance with Australian accounting standards and relevant legislation.
  • Trust returns - Prepare and lodge trust tax returns and distribution statements, ensuring that distributions align with trust deeds and applicable tax laws.
  • SMSF accounting - Prepare financial statements and annual returns for self‑managed superannuation funds, and liaise with auditors to finalise the SMSF's compliance obligations. (This is not required but a bonus if the candidate has the expertise)
  • ASIC compliance - Ensure ASIC statement is sent to clients on time, prepare basic solvency declaration, and update company details as authorised.
  • Process improvement - Identify and implement process efficiencies, leveraging technology (e.g. cloud accounting, automation tools and workflow systems). Provide input on software solutions to improve productivity and client service.
  • Client service and support - Communicate with clients and Australian‑based team members via email, video calls and project management tools. Provide timely responses to queries and proactively manage deadlines.
  • Team development - Assist the company founder in various administrative tasks. As the offshore team grows, supervise junior staff, review their work and provide coaching and support.
