The central work of Public Affairs is to build strategic relationships with opinion leaders who affect the reputation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and whose actions and influence can help or hinder the Church's mission.

  • Builds and maintains key relationships with nationally and internationally influential opinion makers. This includes those in government, news media, politics, academia, other religious organizations, ethnic minorities, etc.
  • Facilitates the interaction of Church leadership with these audiences. It is therefore strategic in its emphasis.
  • Additionally, it includes the function of initiating and disseminating news of the Church, and responding to breaking news, major issues, media inquiries, stories and TV/radio news programs.
  • Also trains and assists local priesthood leadership and members serving in public affairs callings.

  • Assists in strategically planning, managing and coordinates public affairs initiatives in alignment with department directives and policies.

  • Assists in Hosting of dignitaries including media, government leaders, key diplomats and dignitaries etc.
  • Responds to priesthood requests for support on significant public affairs issues.
  • Provides daily scans of the national and international media for headquarters.
  • Identifies and acts on major national issues, breaking news stories or opportunities that need attention or response.
  • May assist the Director as media spokesman for local and regional media.
  • Keeps attuned to global issues that might affect the Church or call for a response or initiative.
  • Maintains beneficial relationships with state and local government entities essential to the successful completion of Church projects and activities.
  • Helps build positive relationships with key audiences, including VIPs in business, education, the interfaith community, local governments, and among minority leaders.
  • Assists in developing outreach opportunities with influential opinion makers, key media and community leaders.
  • Provides support for special projects such as temple open houses, family campaigns, media initiatives.
  • Helps create a climate where missionary work can flourish, and member retention can be improved.

  • College degree in public relations, communications or related field

  • Minimum 7 years Prefer 8+ years In areas related to Public Affairs; Communications; Marketing; Media; Government Relations; International Relations, etc. Equivalent experience may replace education
  • Ability to think strategically, and bring people together in ways that benefit the Church and its entities.
  • Familiarity with Church organization and priesthood governance, event planning and management.
  • Experience essential with an array of cultures, peoples, working professional media, and government and business leaders.
  • Excellent interpersonal and writing skills. Knowledge of Church policies, procedures and doctrines.
  • Language ability desirable.
