Core Responsibilities and Focus Areas

The RHOCP Hybrid Cloud FinOps Practitioner's job description typically centers on the following

key areas:

  1. Financial Planning, Analysis, and Governance

● Budgeting & Forecasting: Develop, manage, and track budgets and financial forecasts

for RHOCP infrastructure and related cloud services across hybrid environments (public

clouds like AWS, Azure, GCP, and on-premises data centers).

● Cost Allocation: Design and implement accurate chargeback/showback models to

attribute RHOCP container and resource usage costs to specific business units, projects,

or teams. This often involves leveraging tagging and metadata.

● Reporting & Transparency: Create detailed, actionable financial reports and dashboards

(e.g., using tools like OpenShift's usage metering or third-party FinOps platforms) to

provide stakeholders (Engineering, Finance, Leadership) with clear visibility into their

consumption and spending.

2. Cost Optimization and Efficiency

● Resource Optimization: Identify, analyze, and drive opportunities for cost savings within

the OpenShift platform and the underlying cloud infrastructure. This includes:

○ Rightsizing container requests and limits.

○ Optimizing storage tiers and usage.

○ Managing Reserved Instances (RIs) or Savings Plans for OpenShift nodes/cloud

VMs.

○ Identifying and eliminating idle or underutilized RHOCP resources.

● Rate Optimization: Work with procurement and cloud teams to optimize the pricing

model for RHOCP and its supporting cloud services.

● Architectural Influence: Collaborate with SRE/Platform/DevOps teams to embed

cost-aware design principles, ensuring new and existing OpenShift workloads are

architected for cost-efficiency without sacrificing performance or availability.

  1. OpenShift and Hybrid Cloud Technical Acumen

● Platform Expertise: Maintain a deep technical understanding of the Red Hat OpenShift

Container Platform (RHOCP), including its architecture, resource consumption models

(CPU, memory, storage), and licensing.

● Hybrid Cloud Context: Understand the financial and technical nuances of running

OpenShift across hybrid and multi-cloud environments, recognizing how different cloud

providers (AWS, Azure, GCP) or on-premises infrastructure impact cost drivers and

optimization levers.

● Tooling: Utilize and integrate FinOps tools, cloud native cost management services, and

OpenShift-specific metrics to gather and normalize financial data.

  1. Cultural Change and Education

● FinOps Culture: Champion the adoption of the FinOps culture, establishing shared

ownership and accountability for cloud spending among engineering, finance, and product

teams.

● Enablement: Educate engineering and development teams on best practices for

cost-efficient deployment and operation of workloads on OpenShift.

Key Qualifications and Skills

● FinOps Knowledge: Strong understanding and practical experience with the FinOps

Framework, principles, and capabilities.

● Cloud Financial Management: Experience with cloud billing, cost management, and

optimization specific to public clouds (e.g., AWS Cost Explorer, Azure Cost Management)

and integrating that with on-premises IT financial models.

● Red Hat OpenShift: Solid working knowledge of the RHOCP platform, Kubernetes

resource management, and containerization concepts.

● Data Analysis: Proficiency in data analysis, reporting, and visualization tools (e.g., SQL,

Python, Tableau, Looker) to turn raw usage data into financial insights.

● Collaboration & Communication: Excellent ability to bridge the gap between financial,

technical (DevOps/Platform), and business teams, translating technical decisions into

financial impact and vice versa.
