Sappi Somerset is one of the largest, most advanced, and high-performing mills in North America, with some of the lowest mill emissions. Our packaging papers serve various market segments including health and beauty, confectionery, premium beverages, and food packaging. We manufacture labels for cans and jars, and our graphic papers are used in direct mail, magazines, and catalogs. Nearly $1 billion has been invested over the last decade to expand into sustainable and renewable SBS board grades for folding cartons and foodservice, including the rebuilds of PM1 in 2018 and PM2, scheduled for completion in 2025. The Somerset mill emphasizes safety, sustainability, quality, and innovation.

We are currently seeking a production engineer to provide technical, process, and production engineering support for a Paper Machine. The successful candidate will optimize process performance to enhance production capability, identify, and implement projects to maintain and improve production volume, quality, and cost efficiency at Somerset.

Performance Objectives

  • Manage and ensure compliance with all safety, hygiene, and environmental systems and programs to maintain a safe, healthy workplace.
  • Provide technical advice and services to improve process efficiencies, product quality, and cost management.
  • Collaborate with all parts of the Sappi organization, both internally and externally, to recommend, initiate, and execute projects as a key member of the Paper Machine team.
  • Develop innovative approaches to solving process and production problems.
  • Demonstrate a strong desire and ability to grow technically.
  • Be capable of filling in for the machine operations manager when needed.
  • Possess the skills and motivation to be promoted to machine operations manager and other higher roles.

Entry Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
  • 5-10 years of experience in pulp or papermaking processes.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and project leadership skills.
  • Proficiency in computer, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Extensive experience in papermaking processes, including calendaring and coating.

Salary is determined based on factors such as the job's value to the organization, market conditions, internal equity, and the skills of the candidate.
