Job Summary

The Physician Engagement Officer is responsible for building, nurturing, and strengthening relationships between a healthcare organization (hospital, health system, medical group, or insurance / payer) and physicians/medical staff. The role aims to align physicians with organizational goals, improve physician satisfaction & retention, support performance improvement initiatives, and facilitate two-way communication between administration and clinicians.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute physician engagement strategies and programs that foster trust, collaboration, and alignment with institutional goals.
  • Act as liaison between physicians and leadership, ensuring physician input is heard and addressed, and administrative messages are effectively communicated.
  • Conduct outreach (face-to-face, virtual, meetings, rounds) to physicians and their teams to solicit feedback, identify concerns, and deliver value propositions.
  • Organize physician advisory councils, roundtables, focus groups, retreats, or forums.
  • Provide onboarding, orientation, and ongoing support to new physicians.
  • Identify and assist in resolving operational, clinical, administrative, or workflow issues impacting physician satisfaction.
  • Serve as consultant or facilitator for clinical transformation, quality, workflow redesign, or value-based care initiatives.
  • Track relevant metrics (physician satisfaction, retention, engagement survey results, feedback themes) and report on progress.
  • Collaborate with departments (Medical Affairs, Quality, Operations, HR, Strategy) to align physician-facing programs.
  • Support recruitment, retention, and wellness efforts for physician staff (mentorship programs, well-being initiatives).
  • Coordinate communications such as newsletters, updates, internal portals, and announcements targeted to physicians.
  • Develop training, educational sessions, and continuing medical education (CME) events to engage physicians in organizational priorities.
  • Monitor and analyze trends, best practices, and benchmarks for physician engagement in the industry; propose enhancements.

Required / Preferred Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree (e.g. in health administration, business, public health) preferred.
  • Prior experience in healthcare, physician relations, medical affairs, operations, or clinical practice.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation, negotiation, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to interact credibly with physicians, clinical leaders, and executive leadership.
  • Strategic thinking, project management, and change management skills.
  • Strong data analysis & reporting skills; ability to derive insights from surveys, KPIs, feedback data.
  • Knowledge of healthcare operations, physician workflows, regulatory & compliance environment.
  • Flexibility to travel (intra-facility, clinics, community) as needed.
  • High emotional intelligence, diplomacy, tact, and credibility.
  • Ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams.
