A Safety Officer ensures workplace safety by conducting risk assessments, implementing OHS programs, and training employees on safety procedures, all in compliance with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) standards and the OSH Law (Republic Act Key responsibilities include site inspections, leading accident investigations, maintaining safety records, and promoting a culture of safety throughout the organization to protect workers and prevent violations.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Compliance and Policy:

Develop and implement health and safety policies and programs that align with the Philippine OSH standards and other relevant laws, such as Republic Act 11058.

Risk Assessment:

Conduct regular Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Control (HIRAC) to identify potential dangers in the workplace and develop strategies to mitigate risks.

Inspections and Audits:

Perform regular monitoring and inspections of the workplace and equipment to ensure safety standards are met.

Training:

Provide training to employees on safe work practices, the proper use of equipment, and emergency procedures.

Incident Investigation:

Investigate workplace accidents and injuries, document findings, and make recommendations for improvement.

Reporting:

Assist government inspectors with OSH inspections and provide necessary information and reports to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

Emergency Preparedness:

Ensure that emergency response procedures are in place and conduct regular emergency response drills.

Promote Safety Culture:

Foster a proactive safety culture by engaging employees, sharing best practices, and promoting safety initiatives.

Key Skills and Qualifications

DOLE Accreditation:

Must be trained and accredited by the DOLE, typically requiring a Basic Occupational Safety and Health (BOSH) training and potentially advanced/specialized OSH training.

Technical Skills:

Knowledge of OHS regulations, hazard identification, accident investigation, and data interpretation.

Soft Skills:

Critical thinking, problem-solving, communication (verbal and visual), training, and strong organizational skills.

Knowledge of OSH Standards:

Staying updated on the latest health and safety legislation and standards in the Philippines is crucial.
