Controller (Remote)

Position Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Remote Controller to join our dynamic team. You will play a key leadership role in overseeing financial operations and guiding our AppFolio Specialists, ensuring accurate reporting, strong internal controls, and strategic financial insights across property management portfolios.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger activities.

  • Oversee and support AppFolio Specialists, ensuring accurate property management accounting and timely reconciliations.

  • Manage and reconcile financial records using AppFolio, QuickBooks Online, Xero, and other accounting platforms as needed.

  • Prepare and present accurate financial statements, management reports, budgets, and forecasts.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance and financial integrity.

  • Ensure adherence to local, state, and federal reporting requirements, including tax filings.

  • Coordinate and manage annual audits, liaising with external auditors and ensuring readiness.

  • Provide strategic financial guidance and actionable insights to leadership and stakeholders.

  • Communicate financial results, trends, and recommendations clearly to internal teams and external partners.

  • Stay updated on accounting regulations, industry best practices, and property management software developments.

  • Mentor and develop accounting staff, fostering collaboration and professional growth in a remote environment.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or CMA preferred.

  • Proven experience in a senior accounting, financial management, or Controller role.

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and internal controls.

  • Hands-on experience with AppFolio highly preferred; QuickBooks Online, Xero, or other accounting platforms a plus.

  • Experience leading accounting teams or supervising specialists.

  • Accounting experience in property management or real estate portfolios strongly desired.

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a remote environment and collaborate with teams and clients.

  • Previous experience in a Big 4 accounting firm is a plus but not required.
