Role:
Linux Server Administrator
Key Responsibilities:
Linux Server Administration

  • Install, configure, and maintain Linux server environments (RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu, SUSE, or similar).
  • Perform routine system maintenance, updates, kernel patches, and upgrades.
  • Manage user accounts, filesystem configurations, permissions, and system services (systemd).

OS Upgrades & Lifecycle Management (Optional to Emphasize)

  • Plan and execute Linux OS upgrades, migrations, and version transitions with minimal downtime.
  • Validate application compatibility and ensure rollback/backup procedures are in place.
  • Document upgrade procedures, risks, and post-upgrade validation steps.

Monitoring & Performance Optimization

  • Monitor system performance and troubleshoot CPU, memory, disk I/O, and network bottlenecks.
  • Tune Linux kernel parameters and optimize server performance based on application needs.

Security & Compliance

  • Apply security patches, harden Linux servers according to best practices (CIS, NIST, STIG, etc.).
  • Configure and manage SELinux, firewalls (firewalld/iptables), and auditing tools.
  • Support vulnerability remediation and compliance reporting efforts.

Automation & Scripting

  • Automate routine tasks using Bash, Python, or similar scripting languages.
  • Maintain Infrastructure-as-Code via Ansible, Terraform, or similar tools.
  • Contribute to the development of automation processes for OS deployments and configuration management.

Networking & Storage

  • Troubleshoot network services (DNS, NFS, SSH, DHCP, etc.).
  • Manage LVM, RAID, NFS, SAN/NAS mounts, and other Linux storage technologies.

Backup & Disaster Recovery

  • Ensure backup systems are configured correctly and validate restore procedures.
  • Participate in DR planning, testing, and documentation.

Documentation & Collaboration

  • Maintain accurate documentation for configurations, procedures, and system architecture.
  • Work closely with other infrastructure teams (network, cloud, security, Windows) to support hybrid environments.
  • Provide escalation support for complex Linux-related issues.

Qualifications:
Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent work experience.
  • 3-5+ years
    of hands-on Linux server administration in enterprise environments.

Technical Skills

  • Strong proficiency with
    Linux distributions
    : RHEL, CentOS, Rocky Linux, Ubuntu, or SUSE.
  • Experience with
    automation tools
    : Ansible, Terraform, Puppet, or Chef.
  • Knowledge of
    virtualization
    : VMware, KVM, Hyper-V.
  • Familiarity with
    container platforms
    : Docker, Podman, or Kubernetes (a plus).
  • Strong command of
    network fundamentals
    and Linux networking tools.
  • Solid experience with
    shell scripting (Bash)
    ; Python experience preferred.
