Responsibilities

  • Accurately assign ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for inpatient, outpatient, SDS, and ED encounters.
  • Review and interpret clinical documentation to ensure accurate and complete coding.
  • Apply all relevant coding guidelines and compliance requirements in accordance with CMS, AHA, and AHIMA standards.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to clarify documentation and resolve coding discrepancies.
  • Maintain productivity and accuracy benchmarks as established by the HIM department.
  • Stay current on coding updates, regulatory changes, and payer-specific requirements.
  • Support quality improvement and compliance initiatives within the department.

Qualifications

  • Active medical coding certification required (e.g., CPC, CCS, CCS-P, or CCA).
  • Minimum 6 months of coding experience preferred (inpatient, outpatient, SDS, and/or ED).
  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II, and medical terminology.
  • Familiarity with EHR systems and coding software applications.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work onsite and maintain confidentiality in handling sensitive health information.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience coding for acute care hospitals or multi-specialty outpatient settings.
  • Knowledge of DRG and APC grouping methodologies.
  • Prior experience with Epic, Cerner, or Meditech systems a plus.
