POSITION OVERVIEW

A Sustainable Design Engineer is responsible for delivering advanced sustainability solutions for building projects, emphasizing energy performance optimization, thermal analysis, building physics, and sustainable design and construction practices.

The role includes providing technical leadership, sustainability advisory services, regulatory compliance (including NCC Section J), and supporting project teams to achieve sustainability goals, including NABERS and Green Star among other certifications.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES

  • Conduct comprehensive building performance analyses, including thermal modelling, passive design, condensation risk, daylight, glare, HVAC system evaluations, and feasibility studies.
  • Undertake detailed energy modelling simulations using industry-standard software (IES VE &/or EnergyPlus).
  • Support energy efficiency assessments and develop practical, cost-effective solutions that improve building passive design, energy performance and occupant comfort.
  • Provide specialist advice on compliance with NCC Section J requirements and more advanced sustainable design initiatives.
  • Assess Life Cycle Impacts (Embodied & Operational life cycle GHG) and design options.
  • Coordinate and assist with the delivery of sustainable design certification processes, for example NABERS and Green Star Building certifications.
  • Engage collaboratively with multidisciplinary project teams, clients, architects, engineers, and contractors to integrate sustainability, passive design and energy performance principles effectively into building designs and operations.
  • Deliver reporting and drawings that clearly communicate complex sustainable design concepts and project requirements to stakeholders.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline, with specialisation in sustainable building design and energy efficiency.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in consulting, energy modelling, thermal analysis, or building performance optimisation.
  • Experience in NCC Section J compliance and energy performance modelling.
  • Proficiency with building simulation software (e.g. IES VE, EnergyPlus/DesignBuilder).
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and project management skills.
