- File and organize records: File and manage patient medical records, both paper and electronic, ensuring they are complete, accurate, and easy to retrieve. This includes indexing, cross-referencing, and maintaining both active and inactive files.
- Manage data and patient information: Enter and update patient demographic, medical history, and treatment information into electronic health record (EHR) systems. Process admissions, discharges, and deaths by accurately recording details.
- Maintain confidentiality and security: Ensure all patient information is kept confidential and protected according to hospital policies and HIPAA regulations. Implement security measures to safeguard records.
- Support clinical staff: Distribute medical charts to the appropriate departments, provide nursing staff with required forms, and retrieve files and reports for physicians as needed. Answer phones and respond to inquiries from healthcare providers about patient records.
- Perform administrative duties: Process patient appointments, verify insurance coverage, and handle correspondence, such as faxes and emails.
- Generate reports: Collate statistics on patient transfers and admissions, and prepare reports for management and other administrative staff.
- Assist with billing and coding: Help with clinical coding by using a system of codes to record illnesses and treatments, and assist with billing processes to support accurate reimbursement.
Skills and qualifications
