Core duties and responsibilities

  • Installation: Run, pull, and install cables (e.g., CAT5, CAT6, fiber optic) through walls, ceilings, and other structures. Mount equipment like patch panels and server racks.
  • Termination: Terminate cables using proper connectors and techniques, ensuring secure and reliable connections.
  • Testing: Use specialized equipment to test signal strength, data transmission, and connectivity to ensure systems meet performance standards.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve issues with cable systems, connectivity problems, and related hardware.
  • Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and repairs on existing cable infrastructure.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of installations, repairs, and service calls.
  • Customer service: Interact with clients to explain services, provide support, and answer questions about their cable and internet systems.
  • Safety: Follow all safety protocols, industry regulations, and use personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Collaboration: Work with other technicians, contractors, and clients to complete projects smoothly.

Essential skills and qualifications

  • Knowledge of industry standards (e.g., BICSI, TIA, NEC)
  • Proficiency with tools like punch-downs, strippers, and digital multimeters
  • Ability to use testing equipment, such as signal level meters
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
  • Physical ability to perform manual labor
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is often required
  • High school diploma or equivalent is typically required
  • Fiber optic experience, including termination and splicing, is often a plus
