Lead SEO Strategist

Employment Type: Project-Based → Retainer (Independent Contractor)

Start Date: ASAP (within 2–4 weeks)


Role Overview

We're hiring a Lead SEO Strategist to own the end-to-end SEO strategy for e-commerce and service websites. You'll define KPIs, build roadmaps, and lead technical SEO, IA, and AI-enabled workflows. The role requires strong leadership, technical depth, and the ability to translate strategy into developer-ready tasks.


Key Responsibilities
  • Define SEO strategy, KPIs, and quarterly roadmaps (RICE/ICE).
  • Lead IA: taxonomy, faceted navigation, internal linking.
  • Conduct technical SEO audits: crawl, indexation, canonicals, hreflang, redirects, sitemaps, robots.
  • Build safe, scalable AI workflows for metadata/alt text.
  • Oversee Core Web Vitals improvements (LCP, INP, TBT).
  • Create dashboards (GA4, GSC, Looker Studio) and deliver monthly reports.
  • Collaborate with dev/content/outreach teams; coach and provide playbooks.

Requirements
  • Proven leadership of SEO strategy across multiple brands/sites.
  • Success with e-commerce (10k+ URLs) and service/local SEO.
  • Hands-on with Shopify, WordPress/WooCommerce; Webflow/headless a plus.
  • Strong technical SEO expertise (crawl/render, JS SEO, CWV, structured data).
  • Experience designing AI-driven SEO workflows at scale.
  • Data fluency: GA4, GSC, Looker Studio; regex/sheets (SQL/BigQuery a plus).
  • International SEO / hreflang implementation.

Engagement
  • Project-based audit + roadmap, then 10–20 hrs/month retainer for oversight/QA.
  • 3 hrs NZT overlap on weekdays.

  • Candidate portfolio must include:

  • 1 e-commerce & 1 service/local case study.

  • SEO plan/roadmap sample + prioritisation model.
  • Dashboard/reporting sample.
