About the Company

We are a mechanical engineering consultancy based in Townsville, Australia, developing a new software platform to digitise and streamline engineering workflows.

We already have an experienced in-house full-stack developer and are now seeking a Business Analyst / Solution Design Lead to document our processes, define system requirements, and translate these into structured, buildable software designs.

This is an exciting long-term opportunity for a professional who enjoys understanding how technical operations work and designing practical, well-documented software solutions that bring those processes to life.

About the Role

We're looking for a Business Analyst to work closely with our Senior Programmer/Full Stack Developer/DevOps Engineer. You'll be the bridge between engineering and business, analysing mechanical engineering workflows, defining functional requirements, and ensuring smooth translation into scalable, secure software systems.

You'll play a key role in shaping our internal software platforms, ensuring they align with both engineering practices and business goals.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyse mechanical engineering and business workflows; translate them into clear, actionable software requirements.
• Translate business needs into functional and technical specifications, user stories, and acceptance criteria.
• Develop and maintain process flow diagrams, ERDs, and comprehensive system documentation.
• Collaborate with developers, DevOps engineers, and stakeholders to ensure accuracy and feasibility of solutions.
• Work directly with the development team to ensure requirements are correctly implemented and tested.
• Develop and maintain a roadmap and feature delivery plan in coordination with management.
• Maintain documentation consistent with ISO9001-style quality and traceability principles.
• Contribute to defining overall system architecture and design standards, including data integrity, scalability, and security considerations aligned with ISO27000 best practices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field.
• 7+ years of experience as a Business Analyst, Systems Analyst, or Solution Designer.
• Proven ability to convert real-world processes into structured software requirements.
• Strong proficiency in process mapping, data modelling, and requirements documentation.
• Experience with diagramming and documentation tools such as Camunda, Lucidchart, or Miro.
• Excellent understanding of web application components/architectures (frontend, backend, database, APIs).
• Experience translating non-software business processes into structured software systems.
• Excellent English communication skills — both written and verbal.
• Strong analytical thinking, with attention to accuracy and clarity.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
• Familiarity with Agile development methodologies, DevOps pipelines, or CI/CD environments.
• Understanding of UI/UX design principles and collaboration tools such as Figma.
• Exposure to containerized systems (Docker/Kubernetes) or cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP).
• Understanding of data integration, API design, or enterprise architecture frameworks (TOGAF, etc.).
• Background in engineering, manufacturing, or industrial software environments.
