UI/UX Designer

Role description

An Experience Designer is a user experience professional adept at planning and designing compelling and consistent client and/or internal-facing experiences. This position combines a thorough understanding of current design trends with knowledge of user research and design thinking.

What Experience Designers do

• Employ a range of human-centered, accessible design techniques, such as conceptual models, personas, user flows, wireframes, interaction design and interactive prototypes to determine and convey design decisions.
• Create accessible interaction modules, screen layouts, pattern libraries, images, icons and other visual elements for experiences.
• Apply and evolve existing brand (visual and interaction) standards to accommodate new products, layouts, interactions, patterns, images, icons and other visual elements.
• Translate business, technical and user needs into end-to-end client and employee experiences that are accessible, inclusive and compliant.
• Engage with experience design peers to ensure artifacts and deliverables accurately represent and align to our One U.S. Bank vision.
• Formally observe user interviews and usability sessions, as needed, and as opportunity allows.
• Use quantitative and qualitative data and insights to create empathy and ensure design decisions are informed by real user needs and human behavior.
• Plan, create and present persuasive, engaging and strategic ideas that influence product roadmaps and demonstrate a solution for potential success.
• Practice reusability by leveraging or expanding the Shield Design System and platform capabilities.
• Work in an Agile environment, which includes planning epics, writing sprint stories and participating in regular Agile ceremonies. Experience Designers must become adept at using Agile tools like Jira and Confluence. Higher levels will contribute to sizing and scoping work for the team.

What Experience Designers DON'T do

• Make things look pretty, or only focus on the pixels or screens.
• Simply take orders. (Instead, Experience Designers are equal participants in strategy, planning and execution).
• Move forward without proper level of understanding of the problem to be solved (requirements, research, discovery, task flows and client value).
• Strictly focus on output.
• Work in isolation from partners and peers.
• Work as project managers or scrum masters.
• Get added to product teams at the 11th hour.
• Lose sight of the big picture.

Designs intuitive, creative and elegant experiences that drive a positive and engaging user experience. Uses technical expertise to bring design decisions to life through quality digital experience prototypes, based in leading design best practices, research findings and analytic insights. Elevates the Shield Design System by focusing on reusability and consistency.

Proficiency in design craft (for Experience Designers) is demonstrated through knowledge of, and proficiency in, the set of design craft skills.
