A ward nurse is responsible for direct patient care, which includes monitoring vital signs, administering medications, and performing treatments. Key duties also involve maintaining accurate patient records, educating patients and their families about their health conditions, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to develop and implement care plans. Key responsibilities

  • Patient care: Provide hands-on care, including administering medications, wound care, and inserting IVs or catheters.
  • Monitoring and assessment: Continuously monitor patients' conditions, interpret medical equipment readings, and report any adverse reactions promptly.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, including admission, discharge, and treatment information.
  • Education: Educate patients and their families about their health, procedures, and post-hospital care.
  • Team collaboration: Work with physicians and other healthcare team members to develop and adjust care plans.
  • Admissions and discharges: Manage the administrative tasks of patient admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  • Emergency response: Respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations.
  • Infection control: Follow and ensure adherence to hospital protocols and infection control procedures.

Required skills and qualifications

  • Clinical skills: A strong understanding of clinical procedures and the ability to administer medications and treatments safely.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving: The ability to think critically, make sound judgments under pressure, and solve problems.
  • Compassion and empathy: A high degree of compassion and empathy to provide sensitive and respectful care.
  • Organization and multitasking: Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and patients simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Physical stamina: The ability to stand, walk, lift, and bend for extended periods.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to work long shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Certifications: Possess necessary certifications, such as CPR.
