JOB SUMMARY:

Assist surgeons in all major and minor surgical cases, maintain the cleanliness and sterility of all instruments and of the whole unit.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Providing Quality Nursing Care within the Operating Department.
  • Ensure safe transfer of patient from regular room to Operating room.
  • Ensure proper nurse to nurse endorsement and obtain initial vital signs.
  • Review, secure informed consent.
  • Participating as a scrubbed member of the OR team and carrying out safety checks of instruments, needles and sponges, in conjunction with a circulating nurse and reporting on the same to the surgeon.
  • Can also act as circulating member of the OR team.
  • Assisting with the other members of the team in the preparation and cleaning of the operating room and from Recovery Roomto Patient's Room or ICU if as ordered.
  • Assisting with the other staff members in the compilation of the Operating Room register in their corresponding logbooks.
  • Labelling and dispatching of laboratory specimens to recovery area.
  • Provide assistance to the Anesthesiologist and Surgeon as required.
  • Checking, witnessing and administering controlled and scheduled drugs.
  • Ensuring the appropriate stock levels are maintained in the Operating Room Department.
  • Reporting to OR Unit Manager or Senior nurse of incidents of accidents, complaints, and defects in drugs, supplies and equipment.
  • Ensures proper self-preparation such as:
  • Ensuring correct dress, scrubbing up, gowning and gloving
  • Preparation of drugs, instruments, and sterile supplies requested for the surgery.
  • Maintaining a sterile environment, thus ensuring sterile technique.
  • Performing sponge, needle and instrument counts with the circulating nurse as per hospital policy.
  • Ensuring specimens are properly prepared and labelled.
  • Completing documentation as per hospital policy such as charting, carrying out doctor's order, pre-operative checklist, pre-anesthetic assessment and WHO checklist and other forms
  • Procurement of room equipment and instrument for the procedures.
  • Renders post mortem care
  • Ensures proper and complete charges of procedures in all cases.
  • Ensures regular soaking of instruments.
  • Responsible in maintaining of cleanliness of instruments and cleaning of special instruments.
  • Responsible together with the staff midwife is the cleanliness and orderliness of the unit.
  • Responsible for weekly scrubbing of the whole unit with the staff midwife.
  • Assist in some minor procedures in other areas if needed
  • Maintains cleanliness of autoclave machines.
  • Maintains sterility and orderliness of instruments, linens and gowns.
  • Accomplish Quarterly Inventory
  • Should observe and maintain confidentiality of all patients
  • Observe and adhere to policy of proper waste disposal and infection control policies such as proper hand washing technique, use of sterile technique when performing special procedures, proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Adhere in wearing proper uniform.
  • Subject to on-call when need arises
  • Accommodates on-call duty when need arises, especially on 2nd day of two consecutive off duty
  • Assist senior staff with the orientation of new staff in the unit.
  • Attends and participates meetings conducted by the Chief Nursing Officer or Medical Director.
  • Any other duties with relevance to the job that may be assigned by your Unit Manager or Higher Authority.
